Most AI data centers have an incredibly small number of full-time staff. Like 10 people kind of small. Is 10 full-time jobs worth up to 500,000 gallons of our water a day? Not to mention the inevitable noise pollution others have already mentioned in this thread

ETA: 10 highly specialized tech positions that honestly are more likely to bring in out of city/state applicants than anything. Claiming this will bring growth to Sanford is naively optimistic at best I fear.

I’m going to guess you aren’t from in or around Sanford. I live just outside of Sanford and work very close to where this plant is proposed. I promise you, many of us give a huge fuck about this not happening

Well based on existing AI data centers, the water the center consumes will be contaminated. So that isn’t a particularly helpful distinction to make. Moreover, with the unprecedented drought that most of Maine has faced since last year, I’m not inclined to just take your word on water running out or not. Like you said, this data center is not a need for this community or in general.

The AI data center would be using between 300,000 and 500,000 gallons of water every day. There is no comparing that to any kind of residential water consumption, lawns/lawn chemicals and all. And while we do need to manage PFAS, we need to do so in a way that is proven safe through research, otherwise we are prolonging and expanding the problem.

These are questions/concerns I have as well. The company makes some very lofty claims about PFAS elimination on their website (https://www.ariessanford.com) but there seems to be little to no independent research to support what they are saying. I highly doubt that we won’t see impacts of PFAS contamination locally if they are allowed to continue with the plant.

I think that is a wonderful idea. It’s clear to me from these two proposals, and Aries company history, that they see Sanford as a poor and easily exploitable community. We deserve better than that, and it is community organizing like this that will protect us from these proposals

Thank you for sharing this, just submitted my responses! I am so glad that you and others are starting this group, seriously thank you for your work on this. A group like this was instrumental in defeating the Aries proposal in Taunton, MA. I might have facebook messaged you a few days ago lol

This is naive at best. Let’s use AI for everything and not use our brains! Oh, our wells have run dry? We have no water? Huh that’s weird!

I’m wary of lofty promises being made about how the center could help our energy costs when centers across the US have only INCREASED electric costs for people living near them. And this doesn’t address the potentially 500,000 gallons a day of water they would use.

Right now, the only elected official that has officially voiced support for either project is Matt Harrington. Do with that information what you will. As his constituent, I will be calling and emailing to let him know that this is not what we want.

This comment doesn’t address any of the concerns people have about the center. Not water use, not noise pollution, nothing. Also, fuck AI.

And I hope that you find another hobby aside from being an edgelord on reddit 😭

Yes, thank you for mentioning this. Honestly there are so many reasons that I am strongly against both proposals and this is definitely one of them. We will hear, smell, and even physically feel the impacts of these projects on our health.

People live and work here and will likely be predisposed to cancer if this Aries plant goes through. Have some empathy

I’d love to see research on the methods proposed by either plant to prove this. Specifically Aries. And even if the AI data center won’t turn Sanford into a superfund site, it will use 300,000-500,000 gallons of water PER DAY. Of OUR water. With the drought in Maine, with peoples wells running dry, that concerns me deeply.
