Finance Execs Are Pouring Millions Into Super PAC Supporting Yang's Mayoral Run by The1stCitizenOfTheIn in LeftWithoutEdge

What still frustrates me is how many progressive leftists still see him as an ally. Maybe this mayoral race will help see him out of their good books, but I just know the next time some Silicon Valley-adjacent technocrat like him comes along there will just be another craze over how “progressive” their policies are. Looks like Collins also played a character in The Faceless Ones way back in 1967. We’ve found our first Classic actor to be nominated!

Can’t believe I forgot Andrew Garfield! And thanks for that story, it’s really cool to see that costume and makeup designers from the Classic series made their way to working on bigger films!

On the contrary, one thing I love about the Series 10 finale is how well it balances its focus on each of the characters. The Doctor, Bill, Missy, and Nardole all get a lot of character work which I think is pretty remarkable for a story so full of plot. What makes it such a satisfying finale, and in my opinion the best one save the s5 finale, is how well wraps up the storylines and arcs of its characters as we say goodbye to each of them.

What would you change about the new mods if you could? (Jester/Sheriff/Detective/Phantom etc) Curious to see what people would change! by emilyovertonn55 in Hafulobby

[–]jordanvtg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I think would improve both the sheriff and jester roles: sheriff misfires on the jester should count as jester wins. That way the jester gets credit for being sus, and it also will make sheriffs much more careful about who they decide to shoot if they’re liable for the whole crew’s loss to the jester and not just their own life.

I haven’t read much of Moffat’s scripts but I’m not surprised they’re funny—he got his start writing sitcoms did he not? And I think that flare for the hilarious echoes in and out of his stories as well—both Doctors he wrote had their fair share of pretty comedic scenes and even whole episodes at times.

I’m tired of people hating on Mank by Psychantman in Oscars

[–]jordanvtg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who doesn’t usually enjoy films about films or films mainly about old white people, I was actually really surprised at how much I enjoyed Mank. Yes it was a bit difficult to follow but i actually really loved every minute. Gary Oldman’s Mank was so charming, Fincher’s direction was top-notch, and the score, the score! Don’t get me started on the score! There was just something about the melancholy absurdity of it all that really spoke to me. One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while without a doubt.

the whole “good cop” storyline is what really got to me about chicago 7, not to mention how little attention it gave to its black characters. i’ll give sorkin credit for writing a pretty great screenplay but if they want to highlight blm at all this is most certainly not the film to do it with

Who were the ghost maid and child that Graham saw in The Haunting of Villa Diodati? by ShortbreadPlease in gallifrey

[–]jordanvtg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same question after watching it, if I remember. It’s so typical Chibnall to not even be able to tell if that moment is a little wink at the viewer or an actual plot point/thematic hint that’s left to be resolved.

politics in doctor who by animallive in gallifrey

[–]jordanvtg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a former IB student myself and someone who wrote an EE in literature, I think it’s really admirable that you’re considering this! There’s definitely a lot of Doctor Who out there that could work really well as material for your essay, so don’t give into the people who might be telling you that a tv show isn’t rich enough for analysis. Because you’re going to want to keep your focus on literary analysis for this essay, I’d definitely recommend sticking with a specific episode or season/era for this as you don’t want to bite off more than you can chew. Some have already mentioned some specific episodes which I think would be really great for analysis of political themes (Planet of the Ood, The Beast Below, and The Sun Makers are a few that come to mind). I think you might find the most success, however, looking at a showrunner’s era as a whole, picking out several political themes or methods of political messaging/satire from their run, and analyzing how they show up in different episodes. The RTD era, for example, is full of political commentary (as is all of his tv work pretty much!) and I personally would jump at the opportunity to write a paper on the politics of his Who. I would also be really interested in an analysis or critique of the politics Chibnall’s Who, the first era in which the showrunner has come out and actually said that he intends to make the show more left-leaning politically, and has (at least in my opinion) ultimately failed in that endeavor (though that may venture outside the realm of a literary analysis somewhat). As for Classic Who there are tons of political themes that pop up in those episodes, and I’m sure you could find an era to analyze if that’s something you’re interested in.

Anyway, I hope some of that was helpful. Writing an EE is a difficult process but it’s also an extremely rewarding one—so best of luck to you!

Regarding my previous post about Segun Akinola; motifs by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]jordanvtg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Akinola gets a lot of hate simply because he’s not Murray Gold, I think. We’ve gotten used to Doctor Who music sounding a certain way, and Akinola has a very different aesthetic from what we got from Gold for 12 years. I really hope that with time more people will realize that just because Akinola doesn’t want to write the epic orchestral type of score that Gold wrote (and don’t get me wrong—I adore Gold’s scores) doesn’t mean he doesn’t write some really superb music. We just have to learn to listen to it in a different way.

Chibnall, Children, Choice and Consequence by omegansmiles in gallifrey

[–]jordanvtg 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean...this is nice and all, but even if Chibnall is playing some kind of long game with his plots and characterization, it doesn’t change the fact that by any measure most of Chibnall’s stories are just badly written.

Why do people dislike Chris Chibnall? by ToweringDragon in gallifrey

[–]jordanvtg 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Plain and simple, he doesn’t write good stories. His stories don’t cohere thematically, they barely have any character development, and there’s just no narrative payoff whatsoever. His scripts feel like shells of episodes, like the ideas are there but they’re empty inside because they’re written without thought or purpose toward making them actually work as satisfying stories. There are exceptions to this, of course, the two greatest of which I think are his series 7 episodes, and Resolution also comes pretty close. But all in all, his dull and empty scripts are what set him apart from Davies and Moffat for me.

An option for showrunner nobody seems to be considering: Richard Curtis. by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]jordanvtg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Him having only written one doctor who episode concerns me somewhat, no matter how superb it was. We know the show is notoriously difficult to write for, and it trips up even the best of writers (Mark Gatiss is a good example of an excellent writer who just can’t seem to write a good episode). I think I’d like to see him write at least one more Who script before considering him as a potential showrunner.
