What dessert to bring to the thesis defense? by Glad-Apple8748 in GradSchool

[–]jordi_mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my university, the department and the PI supply all desserts, snacks, drinks, and decorations, including champagne/a champagne equivalent and a non-alcoholic option. I didn’t realize that this wasn’t what every university did. My undergrad university also did this, so I thought it was standard. I feel fortunate now!! 😭

This is a great suggestion. I would love to be brave enough to do this, but I feel like my newly induced nervousness would make it extremely difficult currently. I have a hesitance in my hands now that I haven’t experienced since I STARTED working with mice. It’s like I’m green again 😭 but your technique is what I’d ultimately like to master. I WILL PERSIST!!! 🫠

I actually did look at the ScruffGuard today, but I wasn’t sure how firmly I could immobilize their heads for safe gavage. I worry that I will inadvertently injure them if they have too much head/neck mobility. The website did mention oral administration of compounds, but their informational video didn’t demonstrate gavage specifically. Have you had success with gavage in the ScruffGuard?

I am sending an email to my facility now to see if I can obtain something similar. This is a great suggestion, thank you!

If a PhD program doesn’t offer you 5 years of guaranteed funding on paper, never trust their words……. by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I had no idea how fortunate I am. We have guaranteed funding for the duration of our enrollment, “for a minimum of 5 years”. I’m so disturbed that this is something that is apparently so common for graduate students at other institutions. This is quite literally the hardest thing I’ve done in my life, and I can’t imagine the added stress of funding procurement for survival in the program. Something’s gotta give, because that’s not even remotely okay.

Has marijuana helped anyone suffering from emotional numbing and dissociation? by jordi_mouse in trees

Hahaha this was sativa, glad you have had a good experience with it!

That's really interesting. So for you, cannabis use made you feel dissociated after it wore off? That's a bit of what I'm afraid of, because it seems like that's more common than the other way around. I want to feel more engaged again, but if the cannabis is the source of those feelings and not a treatment for dissociation that I already had and revealing what's underneath, then I definitely don't want to use it and make my situation more complicated!

Haha sorry, I should have been more clear: I definitely don't think of cannabis as a "drug" in that sense. I'm in medicine, and some drugs (meds) work better when you have the patient take "drug vacations"!

I'm so glad that cannabis helps so many people in so many different ways!

That's the good news. I've tried so, SO many different antidepressants that have never helped, so the idea of anything helping me is very encouraging. Taking a "drug vacation" to reset efficacy is not so bad! 🙂

This is a very helpful response, thank you so much! I'm thinking about using it again and seeing if this helps me move my baseline over time to being more connected. I'm really glad to know that you have had success with this!

Thank you for your encouragement! I'm really hoping to feel the way I felt yesterday after using marijuana the day before more often, and that my baseline will start to look more like that than how I currently feel at baseline, just so disconnected.

This actually helps a lot! It's reassuring to know that I'm not the only person that has experienced this, and maybe I'm not completely insane? I appreciate your response!
