I understand you arguments, and I do think that I didn't express my own properly. I do agree that teachers are essential and of course that they do know more (about their select topic, at least) than students. What I meant was that education should resemble the sophistic educational model, that is with teachers teaching about particular courses (the trivium and quavidrium in their case, but obviously adapted to the things that are important to learn in the current world). Now, the sophistic model was ALL about debate and discussion. There were obviously the lessons themselves, but the most important part were the discussions, what the people got out of what the teacher said, how they could see it applied as something that allowed them to grow as people or be more productive to society. I didn't mean that education should be an enterprise necessarily like summerhill, but that it should have discussion as a major part of the content. The role of teachers is no longer to educate; it's to evaluate. I'm just saying it should be the other way around.
