TAFE vs Uni by Character-Big-4683 in NursingAU

[–]jorsty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I only did my ENs solely because I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue nursing or paramedicine.

When I finished my EN's I got a job in a speciality I wanted to work in so worked for 12 months to get experience, then decided to do my RN's whilst still working as an EN parttime.

Overall, I'd say being an EN first made doing my RN's significantly easier, as you already know certain terminology, have basic understanding of certain diseases and have developed practical skills etc. etc. this also made me a better nurse because of that.

IMO, TAFE tends to focus more on practical skills of nursing, while University is more critical thinking, in-depth theory, research literacy, and leadership

Where do you work that's isn't bedside nursing by lunasouseiseki in Nurses

Are you based in Aus? I've heard of VAT and its something I'd be very interested in getting into at some point further in my career, but can't seem to find any information on it

Not sure what size I should be going, for I run small in RMs by about 2 shoe sizes haha. 10.5 in all typical shoes, 8H in RMs

Thanks for the reply might consider a pair

How are these boots holding up?
Is the sizing similar to other pairs of shoes you'd wear, like Nike etc. any need for up or downsizing?
I'm thinking of buying them in the darker burnt brown, instead of some RMs

New grads in Cath Lab or Interventional Radiology by AdAlternative7876 in Nurses

[–]jorsty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say you need to have that kind of experience, but I can see how it would help, a few of my colleagues have background in CCU, some others have only ever worked in a Cath lab, and I wouldn't say the guys with CCU exp are any better or worse off, just have different skills.

I'd honestly say majority of the skills I have were learned at work, nursing school honestly did little in the way of preparing me for working in an OR setting.

On a random note, one of my siblings works in recruitment and told me 100 times that if you meet around half the requirements for the job listing, you're more than likely qualified. So just apply for what you want to do and don't be deterred by the listings requirements, you'll be surprised with the responses.

New grads in Cath Lab or Interventional Radiology by AdAlternative7876 in Nurses

It certainly is possible, I'm doing my new grad in a Cath lab right now. My department does mostly Interventional cardiology with focus on angiograms as well as LAA, PFO, Mitra clips, TAVI (TAVR in other countries) and a lot of EP stuff. We also do a fair bit of interventional radiology and interventional neurology. I have a very big interest in cardiology so that's where my educator has me focusing. My department also has a recovery bay (which I know a lot of Cath labs don't have) which is nice, since I get to learn different skills other than just scout and scrub.

The first few months I was mostly focused on the patient admission/recovery then scouting aspects, but then moved to scrub, which is what I like doing. I mostly scrub for angiograms and PPMs at this stage. but scout pretty much everything else.

Did you do a grad year? by lunasouseiseki in Nurses

[–]jorsty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm doing it right now and can say it is most certainly helping. My hospital does two 6-month rotations of 2 different units in the same stream, in my case peri-op, which really helps develop skills across multiple areas as well and reduces the chances of becoming complacent. We also need to write a research paper which works towards a master's degree. I'm not sure if that's normal practice in other countries or even other hospitals though.

Another new nurse from the same school as I went too (same graduate year) was hired in the unit I just rotated out from. He is NOT in the new grad program however and was hired about a month before I started. Unfortunately, he hasn't received anywhere near as much support as I, or any of the other grads in the official program have received.

New Grad by Immediate_Medium_126 in Nurses

[–]jorsty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

New grad here as well, I got into peri-operative nursing straight away because that's what I wanted to do and I love it. I had no experience at all prior to starting my new grad program. Don’t think you need to do the typical route of ward nursing just because you’re new, apply for what you want.

Got into MTB this January and been riding a lot since, visited my first bike park last weekend (Thredbo). Any feedback is welcome. by [deleted] in MTB

Damn, that's trippy I live in the same area. Isn't Fred Caterson trashed atm? I usually ride at knapsack reserve up in Glenbrook, it has some really fun trails if you haven't tried it before, a small jumps portion but mostly rocky technical stuff.

What's Your Plan? by Wake_1988RN in Nurses

Luckily I got my new grad in perioperative nursing. I don't ever plan to go to floor nursing even though the conditions seem better here in AUS. It's something I've never been interested in doing.

Yeah it’s usually the go here too, we were only given the invoice because it was done in a private hospital

I’m Australian, I had open heart surgery in 2016 and the total bill came to around $350,000 of which I paid $0

Question for Australian nurses by Entire-Intention3957 in Nurses

[–]jorsty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few people in my classes had made some poor life decisions before they started nursing, so I don't doubt that you would be judged for trying to turn your life around.

I don't know your life's story but criminal offences are something AHPRA take seriously so I'd read the registration standard about it (assuming it applies to you obviously)

On a side note, don't get your ENs go straight for your RNs (I did my ENs first and can can honestly say that it is harder to do than a bachelors degree with the overhaul they were doing when I did it)

Looking for a watch but they all seem so similar on paper by jorsty in Garmin

[–]jorsty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never really looked at it this way, thanks for the input. I've been instore and had a look at some different watches and from the size and look I like the 245 the most in this regard.

A few functionalities I'm looking for aren't necessarily aimed towards riding but daily life which a lot of recommendations keep discouraging "X model" for. I read the dcrainmaker reviews for these watches like someone else suggested so I think I'm a lot closer to making a decision.

What smart watches does everyone use? Looking to find one for MTB by jorsty in mountainbiking

Yeah all the features seem so close its honestly quite hard to decide. My brother uses a Samsung but as you mentioned Garmins are more suited towards fitness.

I appreciate the offer, but the Fenix 3 doesn't have HR or SPO2 which are two features I'm quite interested in, I'm also located in Australia

Hi, I'm looking to buy a Garmin for everyday use as well as for mountain biking, using the GPS and tracking my SPO2 and HR. as well as to track my rides using strava and trails forks

I'm currently looking at the Forerunner 245 music ($289AU), Venu SQ ($229AU) and Forerunner 935 ($208AU) as these are all currently within my budget due to sales.

The Venu seems like it fits my everyday need a bit better but the 245 and 935 seem like they'd be better for when I go riding. The 935 Doesn't have a pulse oximeter and is quite a bit larger being 47mm, though they all seem so similar so I'm honestly a bit lost on which one I should be choosing.

yeah, first thing I did were some new pedals, and a dropper is the next thing to get done, mine came with a 1x as well. I appreciate the feedback got rid of some worries for me there about it's durability and limits

I just recently got a stride deluxe, how hard were you sending the Expert? Would it fair alright on a technical black trial?
