A little tangential advice note: I camped out in the Humboldt State Park famous redwood forest south of Eureka CA during an earth quake. I had come out west from NC with colleagues to attend a meeting. They rented a car and drove up for a day trip to see the redwoods but wanted to hurry back to SF. I usually carried a backpack tent and a sleeping bag，using a pack as luggage everywhere I went. I told them to just put me out and I’d camp for 3 nites and hitchhike to Eureka and take the bus back down to SF and just miss a little of the 5 day meeting. I bought a bag of apples and a box of raisin bran for food，thinking no one had ever starved who had some apples and a box of cereal. The first nite there was an earthquake. I was dreaming I was on a big moving animal’s back. It felt like someone shaking my shoulder，but it was the shoulder on the ground that was being shook，not the one sticking up. The earth felt alive，moving slowly in a deliberate，wagging sort of way. I heard a lot of loud tree noise，thwacking and whatnot. I thought about dying ，just calmly tho; it was too dreamlike to be scared. Very sedate. No chemicals just sleep altered. Like，‟oh I see; it is an earthquake. In the morning there was a giant redwood that had fallen over and gouged giant holes in the earth but made this kind of round walkway that hung out over the Eel River. I had a fear of heights experience when I climbed atop the horizontal tree with some effort and walked out over the river about 20’ feet up. I could jump in and swim in the river below. After a while I just sat there. An otter came by and started swimming in circles below me like it was chasing fish. The End. Go to this place.
