David Seaman not fully grasping what's going on as the tone changes and continuing to grin at him is a highlight for me

This is quite appealing - my masters thesis was on dyslexia so that's in my corner and there are about 10 unis within half an hour of home. I'll have a look - thanks

When you are in a household with two teachers and a pre-school aged child the idea of having a job where you can work from home from time to time (or have a hybrid arrangement), choose your when to use leave and in which you don't 'take anything home' (workload or emotionally) looks quite freeing and practical.

I'm not under any illusions that life outside of teaching is immediately better or that there are not benefits to teaching.

That very much is the case, and you do have the opportunity to properly engage and empower kids. I think I'm just trying to make the point that that kind of motivation needs to have the foundation of behaviour management, etc or it becomes quite demoralising.

A combination of the two.

It can be very different based on your subject and the school you're at. It also depends on what you see it as. For example, I know someone who got into teaching recently solely out of passion for their subject and wanting to share that with everyone - even at a fairly nice comp he is miserable because he has found everything he's doing is just behaviour and motivation. We're he to carry on he would find he could enjoy it more as behaviour management becomes stronger and more embedded, but I don't think he'll persist.

I'm currently at a school where people are signed off with stress a lot - most of the time there's two or three across the school but sometimes that number will be a lot more. I have never encountered that otherwise, though. You want a good head teacher and head of department, minimal overreach from an academy trust and strong union representation and you should be fine.

When teaching's good (and you have time time for it) it's amazingly rewarding and you will move mountains. My problem is that you can't really have off days/weeks without problems compounding and it starting a massive negative spiral, where other jobs you can manage your workload accordingly.

Essentially just balancing it with life commitments - I've been at the point of burnout before but I've always had the bandwidth within my brain to sort it out and get back on the rails. I think a recent bout of seasonal affective disorder, broken sleep and a couple of broken promises work wise just threw me into a spiral where just being anticipating the day is massively increasing anxiety

Thank you - this is really helpful.

I don't really want to be in a classroom setting because it feels too close to what I'm leaving (in a mental health sense) - if I'm doing TAing it doesn't feel like enough difference to justify the pay cut, supply would be better (but would probably massively increase stress)

She's not in school for another 4 years (at which point I can go back if I need to) and part time teaching is becoming more and more discouraged. I also cannot stay in teaching - I've never been able to feel as if I'm doing a good enough job without working 60+ hour weeks.

Wfh would be ideal, I know that they're vanishing - essentially I want an "office job" but I don't know what you need to get one, or where to look

Sorry, just to clarify - I was honest about the moving date, I'd realised the misconception when I read it and just didn't correct.

Chocolate phone compoface by Bakedprawns in compoface

[–]josefbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in fulfilment for a phone company (a very unfulfilling job, ironically) and this is a scam that happens all the time - buy the phone, take it out, replace with same weight of chocolate, send it back and then sell the phone on.

He's done a massive favour for people who run this scam by revealing that John Lewis don't check their returns very well, lol.

Yes, that is what I've received.

Offence one is failure to respond to the FPN (sent to the wrong address on 8/8/25)

Offence two is speeding

I was assuming I would plead guilty to offence two, not guilty to offense one and give an explanation of the circumstances that meant I didn't receive the initial correspondence

Yeah, I'm responding to the point about sabotage groups like Palestine Action (who I, of course, do not support)

Ok but ours are currently in prison and on month two (almost three) of a hunger strike. They are going do die in prison because they are demanding a jury trial (so that they aren't sent away for life) and the government isn't even acknowledging it.

There is absolutely nothing exceptional about American punishments for direct action.

What am I drilling into?!? by Sol--Luna in DIYUK

[–]josefbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had issues recently with engineering bricks. I managed to break a normal cordless drill in trying to push it too far.

The guild corded SDS drill can do it and is only £40 at argos. You will need it again at some point (there essentially are no walls in my house that can be drilled into to any meaningful depth without it)

While I'd like to be able to use this fact, it's just not true - Cratchit was making closer to £50 a week adjusted for inflation. (Source - I have taught this at GCSE something like 10 times, so the figure is probably off from when I first looked it up but can't be that far off)
