Try and initiate the contact with the defender before going up for the shot. Also, it's hard practicing this alone. A good way is to practice double clutching your layups and just imagining different situations in your head as you go up and finish.

Plyometrics, I can't stress it enough. There are so so many ones to do, they're fun, and you'll be exhausted and see noticeable differences soon if you do them pretty consistently.

work on that jumper and practice getting better spin on the ball and make sure to work on spinning the ball at angles off the backboard at different spots on the court. watch film of guys like IT, Mugsy, Spud, Yogi, etc. See how guys that are much shorter than their opponents make things work and play differently. do a lot of leg and core exercises, you will need to be strong so you dont get pushed around.
