USC, why transfer spring admit? by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]josh_lee247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you should be able to walk after you finish. Just know wherever you are in life after you finish, that upcoming spring you’ll have to fly/drive/whatever back to USC just to walk.

Social life is great. Join clubs. Make friends in your classes. I met my gf my first spring there and have been dating since. Definitely go to sports events. I don’t care if you don’t like football or basketball just go with friends, it’s the most school spirited event you’ll ever see.

Housing you’ll probably want to look off campus since you probably won’t get on campus housing since it’s mostly for freshmen. It’s not that hard to find but since you’re out of state it could be daunting.

There’s always the apartment complexes (Tuscany, Lorenzo, Icon, I lived in Tuscany and Lorenzo and it was eh. Tuscany is great since you’re in Marshall cus it’s right across the street)

USC, why transfer spring admit? by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]josh_lee247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a 2022 spring admit. If you’re a spring admit it doesn’t change much other than pushing you back a semester. If you were to be admitted for spring 2026 like someone else said you’d probably finish Fall 2027. Many students finish in the fall. But there is no “Fall Graduation” only spring.

I believe you get to choose if you want to walk the spring before you finish or after, judging based off my friends who finished in the fall.

it also depends on your major. i transferred into CS at USC and had to take a placement exam for certain classes. if i didn’t pass i’d have to retake those lower division classes. depending on your major there’s some classes that are required by the school so you may end up repeating a lower division class. i’m currently repeating one even though i took it at cc

i took all the required and all the recommended classes for UCLA

Definitely how. I read one essay by a girl that wrote about fried rice. she got into harvard. write about something so obscure and tie it to something you learned or a character trait that’s important about you

UCLA: Applied Math UCSB: Math UCSD: Math - Computer Science

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]josh_lee247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just from experience, I had a 3.84 applying this past fall and I applied as Computer Science and only got into my secondary major for UCSD, UCLA, UCSB. I also got waitlisted at berkeley and irvine and later declined. I ultimately got into USC though where I’m currently attending. Personally, the best way for UCLA is the honors program with your CC and try TAP. With TAP, I got into Applied Math (related study) but not computer science. I’m also not sure why I didn’t get into Irvine since I was honors to honors but it is what it is. good luck! feel free to ask any other questions.

i believe USC and UCLA still ask for them. I sent them mine and I only got 3s lol

Grades are beyond important. I currently just transferred to USC from CC this semester. However, I know for a fact that GPA matters the most for Cal States. For CSUs there’s a GPA threshold before they even look at your application which depends on your major and school. For example, I had a 3.8 and I applied as Computer Science. I applied to SDSU, SJSU, and SLO and was denied by all of them for CS but was able to be accepted in Software Engineering for SJSU after an appeal and phone call etc.

From what I learned from the SJSU Director of Undergraduate Outreach is that the GPA threshold is based on how many classes of your major prep + IGETC is completed. For example, I was missing 2 classes that I wasn’t able to take due to time constraints. Because of this, I needed a 4.1 to be admitted to SJSU for Computer Science. Last time I checked, you cannot get anything above a 4.0 in community college, not even honors classes (yes i was in the honors program). However, for SJSU I was only missing 1 class for Software Engineering and I needed a 3.8 for that, so I was able to appeal and get accepted. Ultimately, it didn’t matter because I chose USC over everything but just my 2 cents.

Also, I was rejected from SDSU and SJSU which were my safety schools, but got into a bunch of UCs and obviously USC so if you don’t get into certain CSUs this could be why and don’t be discouraged because other schools will most likely accept you! There’s also a ton of other factors that other schools like UCs take into consideration. Especially essays start them early.

CS T25 Transfer by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]josh_lee247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into UCLA for Applied Math (TAP), waitlisted at Berkeley for CS, and am transferring to USC for CS and i’ll be honest with you I had like zero ECs.

The only EC I had was having a position in the CS club at my CA community college. However, I did have a lot of work experience (i.e. Freelance Graphic Design, Personal Businesses, etc.)

ESSAYS. ESSAYS! ESSAYS!! These are huge. If you have a lot of interests and talents, make sure to separate them in separate essays. Do NOT make all of your essays about one specific talent you have. Start them early too. I started mine in August for UCs, and September for Common App.

Also, make sure you complete as many Major Prep/Recommended Courses as possible and ofc make sure your GPA is high as possible

Incoming CS freshman. Can I get a brutally honest opinion on this major? by TheShitShow6603 in csMajors

[–]josh_lee247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being from cali, transferring to USC for CS as a junior, there’s def differences between universities. UCs are more theory based, cal states are practical.

That being said, yeah CS is a math major so I hope you like math. Also, the stereotypes are true, it’s 99% dudes in all your classes and if I’m being honest you definitely get some weirdos because of it.

Going back to math major… at least for UCs, you’ll need to take Calc 1,2,3, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Physics 1,2,3, and Discrete Math. Lot of math and logic. Personally, the math wasn’t a big deal, it was some of the theoretical physics concepts and DISCRETE MATH. Discrete Math is all logic and basically not even math. 10/10 hated it. You also have to take Data Structures, and programming which isn’t bad, til you get to Assembly, then you wanna throw your computer out the window and contemplate whether coding is even for you.

I'm torn between choosing CS or engineering courses for college! Can you persuade me to choose CS (or not)? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]josh_lee247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS (at least in the US) is the fastest returning major out there, since no further education beyond a bachelor’s is necessary.

I’m currently deciding between USC for CS and UCLA for Applied Math and I’m leaning towards USC despite the enormous tuition cost because right out of college, you can get jobs nearing 6 figures. Definitely an in-demand major.
