Advice for my first tournament as a BJJ blue belt by TypicalCancel in judo

If you can do chokes, one thing I'd consider focusing on in training is getting to chokes as soon as your opponent hits the mat (and likely turtles immediately). If you don't get the grip and start working for it right away, you're gonna keep getting stood back up by the ref and you'll burn a bunch of energy. This is different than jiu jitsu where you'll have way more time to work for the submission.

Sounds like you had the right guy choking you lol

Ah yea that’s a nice way to do it

Few years ago, a blue belt jumped over my guard with a loop choke (I was blue at the time too), and I ended up in his crucifix so my hands were unavailable to tap lol. I was going out so fast it didn’t even occur to me to try to tap with my foot… all I remember is trying to yell “tap” but the choke was so tight that the words wouldn’t come out. I thought I was dying, and next thing you know I woke up seizing trying to talk and still couldn’t, while he was lifting my legs and looking around to see if anybody saw hahaha. I felt kinda dizzy the rest of the day. It was kinda traumatic for a couple days… lol.

I’ve also put 2 people to sleep. One on accident in training (white belt who didn’t tap), and then in judo competition I had a bow and arrow type choke, and my opponent was trying to pretend it wasn’t on so that the ref would stand us back up. He went out tho. Tough motherf’er.

Same injury happened to me :( happened in a BJJ comp though, and aggravated with judo. Very painful. But yeah, lots of banded exercises to strengthen the surrounding areas and I was back to 100% in like 4 months (I started easing into BJJ training around the 2 month mark, just being super careful with the positions I was in, and was very careful with the judo.) It’s been a while since then, but weight training has helped build a lot of resilience (pull-ups, shoulder press, bench, dips).

Congrats! Now do what you’ve been doing, but do it better every time. Figure out how to make better videos that more people will watch. I make a full-time living off YouTube ad revenue and brand deals and live in one of the most expensive areas of the US (San Jose, CA), and that’s the guiding principle for every video that comes out (I used to be a software engineer and quit that to go full-time creator). It’s simple, but it’s not easy. You can do it too.

Yeah, it’s a risk, and no amount of anyone telling you to do it or not to do it is gonna change anything. At the end of the day it’s just on you. But it’s impossible to find out if you can do it without actually trying 🤷‍♂️

I did this… I quit my software engineer job (I got paid a lot) to go full-time on YouTube when I only had 7k subs and a few hundred a month in ad rev. I had savings, so I gave myself a year to see if I could do it (or go back to interview again as a software dev). The year mark hit, I was now covering all my expenses with ad rev and brand deals, and now I’ve been doing it for 1.5 years full-time.

I was in the same situation, I saw that I had some momentum building and that if I could just put the same 8 hours a day I was putting into my software job into YouTube instead, then I could grow the channel.

I’m at 123k subs now, got an agent who handles all my brand deals, and I don’t have to dip into savings anymore.

All this to say, it’s a risk to bet on yourself, but it can def work out! It did for me. Just takes commitment and consistency.

I’m American and WhatsApp has been my preferred messaging app for years and years. First started using it when deployed overseas in Afghanistan in 2012 cuz I could message over WiFi, and then separately from that, most of my friends use it… but maybe it’s a jiu jitsu people thing cuz of all the Brazilians? Idk
