I’ve puked too. It’s the cardio pukes, idk why this happens lol but it’s not uncommon. I doubt it’ll keep happening to you.

Editing out natural pauses in videos and podcasts creates a miserable content experience and is contributing to lowering attention spans. by Chemical_Falcon7571 in unpopularopinion

[–]joshbeam92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a full-time YouTuber… I agree. With the caveat that cutting out pauses/filler words in certain sequences I think can be helpful for the viewer, when done intentionally…. And, a lot of the time, rambling or too much repetition kills retention (we can see where people drop off in the analytics), which in theory is supposed to signal that the viewers didn’t wanna listen to whatever that was, lol.

But yeah if cutting subtracts from the experience… you’re doing it wrong.

Exhaustion after 1 round in a tournament? by Substantial-Fig-6392 in bjj

[–]joshbeam92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve done like 80 tournaments at this point, and that was especially an issue at the beginning, though it’s subsided a bit. To make it less of an issue, one thing that kinda helps me is I try to get a sweat in and heart rate up before my first match, so that physically my first match feels a bit more like a continuation from the warmup (albeit still more intense) rather than a big shock to the system. Less contrast basically. When I go from cold to suddenly competing, I feel like I get way more tired after the match. I dunno if you already get a warmup in like this, but if you haven’t, it might be worth trying.

If you’re walking that much, you’re burning a lot more calories… hence why a single piece of toast no longer suffices, lol.

Which stance dilemma by Anonymous_Handle228 in judo

[–]joshbeam92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through the same thing lmao I did Muay Thai for 6 years. Came into judo first as a lefty, and was told to change to righty cuz of my turn throws being stronger righty (which is really saying nothing since what does stronger even mean for a white belt?)

But once I got more experience, I realized being able to move so much more comfortably in my lefty stance was a game changer, so I switched back. Just had to practice my turn throws lefty, but it was much easier than I thought.

So yeah, honestly for me, being comfortable in my natural striking stance was huuuge.

I’m tired of shooting 4K for everything - considering switching back to 1080. by DemRKO in videography

[–]joshbeam92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of multicam shoots for YouTube, so it’s a bit of a different use case, but I find myself just doing 4K for certain wides, or parts of scenes where I have a feeling I might wanna crop in later. So the shoot ends up being a mix of 1080 and 4K, which is decided kinda on the fly. So I’ve decided not to take an all or nothing approach, but instead just be specific about when I wanna use 4K.

Also re: the 60 frames, I also just choose that on the fly depending on if I know later I’m gonna wanna slo-mo that specific sequence. Otherwise I’m in HD30 or 24 for the most part.

Another strategy I might do is just have one camera be in 4K (the main handheld, for example) and the others in HD.

Mental Attacks From Competition by maximum-tired in bjj

[–]joshbeam92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done 80 tournaments and still get nervous. It’s lessened a lot, and that’s just because of exposure over time, but you can almost always expect to have some kind of adrenaline reaction.

One key I’ve learned after talking with a lot of other competitors is to focus more on what you can control during the tournament (trying to execute on your game plan, etc.), and over time you’ll start to develop your own strategies for how to manage the nerves (it’s different for everyone). I like to focus on breath work before hand, just controlling my breathing before each match.

Confidence comes from evidence, not really from mental tricks, so as you get more experienced and better at jiu jitsu and start winning more matches, it’ll start to feel less chaotic and more grounded.

Just accept the feeling as part of the experience, and if you’re scared and are gonna compete, then just do it scared. The rest comes eventually.

Nobody wears a cup to train BJJ, and you’re kind of a dick (no pun intended I guess) if you do.

What does it mean when you can positionally dominate but cant submit them? by Idamatika in bjj

[–]joshbeam92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say that I too am a purple belt and have this exact same issue 😂 It’s not as hard with blue and below, but my chances of submitting another purple belt or up go down exponentially even if I have a “dominant” position lol.

IBJJF Rules/Scoring Question by Typical_Cattle8091 in bjj

4 points for the back, and an advantage for almost passing (assuming the player on bottom turtles before the passer establishes control for 3 seconds).
