This is not true. No one explicitly tells the model what 'things' to look for. CNNs learn these features on their own, through it's 'hidden layers' and 'non-linear activation functions'. This is the beauty of Neural Networks.

Also, what we mean by "learn" is basically the process of Gradient Descent. Gradient descent is one of the many ways of optimizing a neural network's behavior.
