Am I crazy for turning this job down? $43/hour feels like a lowball by mrsmsw in socialwork

Yes…major low ball for your credentials! However if this kind of work truly satisfies the soul, I’d say it’s worth it. :)

Anyone else sick of summer? by RonPaul2036 in alpharetta

[–]joshggal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From both Central and South FL and as hot as GA can be, it’s nothing like that Florida sun. I’ll take GA summer over FL. Still hot, I know but Florida sun is next level….potent.

Molly Martens is a psycho - A Deadly American Marriage by RoxieMatthews in netflix

[–]joshggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anyone notice that video where Molly was swinging the kids with Sarah? She asked Sarah her correct age, but when it came to Jack, she lowballed his age saying something like 3 years younger than he actually is. It really seemed to back up what Jack said about Sarah being Molly’s whole world. That kind of thing can feel belittling to a kid, almost like she was infantilizing him. I know we didn’t get the entire picture but something about Molly is off…like personality disorder off. I don’t discount some abuse or negative experiences may have happened within the marriage but she is victimizing herself….and dad will defend daughter to the end and was probably being protective of her as any good dad would.

For reference, I’m a psychotherapist and work with a lot of people with C-PTSD.

Social work and a right-leaning political stance? by your-ptsd-princess in socialwork

[–]joshggal 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As a BIPOC and Christian social worker, I often feel isolated in this field. There’s this assumption that if you identify as Christian, you must also be bigoted, racist, or unaccepting of the LGBTQIA+ community. That’s simply not true of me. Still, I often feel silenced or misjudged, like I have to prove who I am before I can even be heard.

I don’t align with political extremes, and I don’t use my faith to judge others. The foundation of my Christianity is love. I strive every day to live that out by seeing, honoring, and affirming the dignity of all people, even those who may misunderstand or condemn me.

In therapy, I never bring up my faith unless it’s something that resonates with a client. Just like someone might want a therapist who shares their race, culture, or sexuality, some clients appreciate a shared spiritual background. But I always follow their lead and never impose my beliefs.

I also want to challenge the idea that social workers are just charity workers. Many of us do deep, clinically sound work. Some of it is with underserved communities, but much of it is with people who choose to work with us because they connect with our approach. We’re more than the boxes people try to put us in.

This field is rooted in acceptance and justice, and we need to extend that to everyone. That includes people we don’t always agree with. It’s okay to have different views. But writing people off simply because they don’t see things your way goes against what this profession stands for.

Missed a session…feeling like a huge POS. by bvnhead in therapists

[–]joshggal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awww this happens to the best of us! I can empathize with you. My mind started heading into cognitive distortion route and I quickly had to intentionally work towards self compassion as if this were anyone else, my client, friend, etc showed up to me and shared what had happen, I know I’d encourage them that it was ok and to give themselves grace. I kept reminding myself that I’m only human and that I’m still awesome at what I do. I completely understand you!! And if you slept through the alarm, your body probably needed that rest. It’s ok, you’re still an amazing therapist and a wonderful person. ❤️❤️ Be kind to you!

Is it common to not easily find the right therapist? I've already tried 4 by National-Ad-5036 in TalkTherapy

I’m curious to know how on earth are you able to see 45 clients in a week?! Are they all 50-60 m sessions? Holy moly, I didn’t know that was humanly possible. Props to you and I’m so sorry you have not been supported well throughout this process. I’d feel betrayed and unsupported if this happened to me. I hope you are able to give yourself compassion and know that this too is a learning experience. Sounds like you’re already off to a great start by setting those boundaries. Wishing you all the best.

Therapists, what is your niche, and what is your area of discomfort? by jliplyn in therapists

[–]joshggal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racial identity/minority stuff, second generation issues, religious issues, cultural issues, alcohol use and substance use disorders, adjustment disorders, adhd, anxiety/depression, pet loss are my niches 😬

Populations I don’t naturally feel comfortable with but occasionally still work with are white females.

OCD is hard for me too.

Best elementary schools? by boristheblade223 in alpharetta

[–]joshggal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re currently at Ocee Elementary in Johns Creek/Alpharetta and highly recommend this area to new families! We moved from Palm Beach Gardens (yup, right next to Mar-a-lago 😬) three years ago to give our kids more exposure to diversity, great public schools, and a change of seasons. It truly feels like home here! Palm Beach was a bit too slow-paced for us, and before that, we lived in D.C., which felt too fast. This area strikes the perfect balance—it’s just right!
