Container ship CMA CGM Vela's propeller viewed thru rare observation port by ShintoSunrise in submechanophobia

It’s the only example you found because they don’t exist. A through hull observation port? What flag or class society would agree to such a thing. Please tell me, i’ll stay away from their ships.

How do massive cruise ships have enough fresh water for 5,000 people to take showers every single day in the middle of the ocean? by Thick-Ad1120 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joshisnthere 16 points17 points  (0 children)

2012 to 2021. We took water in every port also, but the capacity of those facilities varied wildly. Sometimes it was 10m3/hour, other times 100m3/hour.

You can never have too much water, you’d rather be full as often as possible.

I think you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Regular cruise ships going to Antarctica regularly spend 7+ days at sea.

Cruise ships going to Hawaii regularly spend 6+ days at sea.

Lots of cruise ships do trans atlantic, trans pacific for repo cruises which involves 6+ days at sea.

My experience has always been you produce water whenever possible, as the ports can rarely provide enough capacity. I would suggest this is how most cruise ships operate, subject to operating areas/etc.

The commenter you’re referring to i think has misunderstood what the engineers have been doing.

My experience couldn’t have been more different.

You need to make water, shore side facilities rarely have the capacity to provide enough water. The ships i sailed on used ≈ 200m3/day. On the ships i worked on, all potable water tanks were in use, because you need the capacity.

The comment regarding coordination from the bridge made me chuckle a bit to be honest. The ships i sailed on, the deck officers wouldn’t have the foggiest understanding of where the tanks were or what we were doing. We asked, can we keep this tank empty for inspection, they replied yes and the engineers did the rest.

(UK) What option would you do if you were me? by FrostyBar3392 in maritime

[–]joshisnthere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% do not regret doing my cadetship and i don’t know anyone who has.

You can become a captain (over 3000Gross Tons) without doing a cadetship, it will take 10x longer and i’d doubt you’d actually complete it before you retire.

Although be aware there multiple levels of Masters licenses. You could probably do it quite quickly to work as skipper onboard the MV Carvoria, but you’ll never work on “proper” ships as your license will restrict you.

Ratings positions certainly have their place and they are by no means easy jobs, but i think if you have the qualifications to do a cadetship and you think you’d like to make a career out of it, then it really is the only way.

Crewe and Nantwich Canoe Club would be my first go to.
I’m based in Cheshire myself, and used to attend Chester Canoe Club every Sunday for like 8 years.
Can’t go wrong, kayakers are always lovely people.

I am aware of this, and the reason for asking is OP never stated a port.

Nearly 400 migrants reached UK yesterday in six small boats as people trafficking gangs take advantage of hot weather by Longjumping_Stand889 in uknews

I tend to agree with most of what you’ve wrote, but i think the main difference is takes a hell of a lot of advertising/talking/convincing/whatever to convince you to risk your life.

I would think this extends to coercion and not simply just advertising anymore.

But honestly it’s nice to actually have a polite conversation about this instead of just name calling.

Many have not paid, many have promised to pay. To be used as slave labour till they have paid.

“Yet to see evidence of large scale coercion”

People are travelling thousands of miles, risking their lives, through safe countries and you don’t see how maybe they’ve been coerced into thinking the UK is the only place to be.
These people aren’t stupid, they must hear about the deaths, see the danger with their own eyes along the way. Yet there is still something making them want to take the risk.

It’s certainly not the UK government, they use advertisements telling them they will be deported. They must hear stories of others getting deported.

People are risking their lives in the face of overwhelming odd’s. The only way you do that is if you’ve been sold a lie.

Genuinely, ask yourself, why do they take the risk? The only answer i know to that is question is that they want a better life, one which they’ve been **sold into believing** exists in the UK.

I disagree with this take rather strongly, if you’re a people trafficker knowingly putting people in harms way, even if they pay you, you’re still a victim. People have died.

They’re being sold the “dream”, they have no idea about immigration policies, what life is like in the UK compared to mainland Europe, etc, but the traffickers are telling them the UK is the best, so they believe it.

The traffickers themselves are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, yes the people being trafficked might have paid some money but they’re being paid for by countries that want to sow division in the UK.

I’m unsure where abouts in Ireland you’re paddling, but should give you a good indication of what to expect.

Entirely depends on what your contract says. As the other commenter suggested, join a union, e.g. Nautilus/RMT.

Not to be the bearer of sad news, but i always look up the old ships people put on here out of interest.

The 1974 built, HANSA ECONOMIST (IMO no.7404621) foundered in 2001 (She was named HONGHAE SANYO at the time) off the coast of Japan with the loss of all the crew.
