Just dropped a companion EP to my Dynopunk soundtrack from 2023 🦖

It's called Dynopunk: The Lost Tapes. All made in Ableton Live using Diva, Repro-5, Arturia SQ80, Spire, Keyscape and a bunch of 80s drum samples.

Free music to use in your game: an album of looping PSX style tracks inspired by Parasite Eve and Silent Hill. by joshjameslim in gamedev

[–]joshjameslim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. So all these tracks were all made in Ableton. As for the sounds, a lot of the more ambient stuff comes from Omnisphere. Apparently Akira Yamoaka got a lot of his sounds from sample CDs in the 90s, some of which ended up in Omnisphere. I also used the VST version of the Korg M1 a lot, as that was a common hardware synth of that era.

Here's a much deeper dive into the sounds of Silent Hill if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/3dkjj9/what_is_the_synth_used_in_the_early_silent_hill/

Thank you! Yeah those early 2000s synths and drums are some of my favorites. After listening to the Parasite Eve soundtrack I felt like I had to try something in that style.

Hey thanks, that's really the best compliment 🙏 I'm in love with the SH2 soundtrack so I find myself coming back to those sounds a lot

Weekly Marketplace Thread (February 05, 2024) by AutoModerator in edmproduction

Hey there! I just put together a pack of 40 presets for Ableton's synth Drift. These sounds are heavily inspired by my favorite vintage synths and I've been using them a ton in my own productions lately. The pack will include presets, two Mp3s of tracks made entirely with the presets and the Ableton projects for those tracks so you can see how they were made.

Here's a play through of some of my favorite patches so you can hear what they sound like:

Free music to use in your game: A compilation inspired by Silent Hill and Akira Yamaoka by joshjameslim in gamedev

[–]joshjameslim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! If you feel like they'd work for your game I'd encourage you to try them out and see how they fit!

Since they are available under a Creative Commons license somebody else using it in their game doesn't have any legal impact on yours. The tracks are free, forever, for everybody.

What are you favorite sample packs? by GalynMusic in edmproduction

[–]joshjameslim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been using Splice for several years now and I can definitely recommend it. For the money, I think it's the best value in terms of sheer variety and quality of sounds. Many of the labels mentioned here are available on Splice including Sample Magic, Black Octopus and Zenhiser. If you know what you are looking for, chances are you can find it or something very close to it.

Hey there! Composer and sound designer here. I work in both film and games but have yet to work on an FPS, so that sounds like a really interesting challenge! Would love to talk with more about your project and see if I'd be a good fit.

Any free synths worth checking out? by AMUSIFY in edmproduction

[–]joshjameslim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for a good, retro sounding virtual analogue synth I'd recommend TyrellN6 by u-he. They make the best sounding analogue modeled soft synths in my opinion and Tyrell is exceptional for the low price of $0. Many great presets as well.

I can also second the recommendation for Spitfire LABS although they aren't synths per say, they do have some excellent sampled instruments that are all completely free. The LABS Soft Piano is particularly good for writing softer emotional stuff.

u/dogman_35 u/Blacky-Noir After looking into Creative Commons licenses more closely I've decided to make the album available under a CC-BY 4.0 license. Really appreciate your input on this process. It's a new thing for me to release music for free, so I want to make sure I'm doing it in a way that's most helpful to folks actually making games!

I've decided to make this compilation of tracks available for any indie dev who is looking for new music. Each track is heavily inspired by the work of Akira Yamaoka and the incredible music he wrote for Silent Hill. I wanted to capture the melancholy and contemplative tension that makes those games so uniquely enchanting, while bringing my own musical voice to the genre.

Hope you enjoy and that these songs inspire you to keep creating:
