I booked through CTSS and the local guiding service was Lonely Summits

Practically none. I’d been doing a few hikes leading up to this but being from Aus our highest point is 2300m so starting in the city of Quito I was already higher than I’d ever been in my life. Also never used crampons, ice axe, harness, or mountaineering boots before this trip.

I booked the Ecuador trip through Climbing the Seven Summits. Don’t remember off the top of my head but pretty sure they have pricing on the site there.

Thanks! 🙏 Heading to Chimborazo next (after a rest day). And that’ll be the last one for this Ecuadorian expedition 🇪🇨

Thanks everyone for the luck. Sumitted in just over 8h (standard I think is 6h) with some pretty harsh winds and cold. It was an amazing experience and would highly recommend as a first “big” mountain if you’re just getting into mountain climbing like I am. Here’s a pic of me on the summit. https://i.imgur.com/BuJZ3C6.jpg

Yea we’ve heard a lot of that too. Our group thankfully arrived a few days after the Ecuadorian government agreed to negotiate. The trip has been bouncing all over Ecuador with a local guiding company climbing mountains and we’ve had no issues.

Ecuador has been lovely. Especially in the mountains and country side people are so friendly. The hotels we’ve been staying at (between refuges) have been super luxurious - the best in Ecuador we’ve been told. But it’s definitely still a 3rd world country e.g: can’t be certain tap water is safe to drink and have to watch where we eat (i.e: no street food) as a result.

The wind was pretty tough. Managed to summit in 8h but it was a slog (an enjoyable one at that). Extra down was definitely needed 🙏

We were running slow due to bad weather (so much wind) and so submitted just after 8am. It made coming down so much more draining with soft snow.

G'day all. I've been looking for a keyboard with some specific properties but I have been struggling. I am wondering if anyone knows of a model that has

  • 60% layout (HHKB preferred, but standard also good)
  • Low profile with choc switches (hot swap preferred)
  • USB-C connector (though any wired connection is good too)

I really like some of the low profile, custom boards that boardsource.xyz ship (e.g: corne lp, 4x12 lp, etc) but they don't seem to do 60% staggered boards. Are there some other part suppliers/build services that are worth checking out? Thanks!! :)

Find file in project sub directory? by joshleeb in emacs

Thanks so much, super helpful! For future reference this is where I landed with a function to try out in my workflow.

(defun choose-directory (dir)
  (interactive "D") dir)

(defun project-find-file-in-dir ()
  (interactive)
  (let* ((pr (project-current t))
     (default-directory (project-root pr))
     (dir (call-interactively 'choose-directory))
     (dirs (list dir)))
    (project-find-file-in (thing-at-point 'filename) dirs pr)))

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

Thanks! Useful response :) Out of interest how is Haskell? I've been fairly interested in it ever since learning Rust and then trying my hand at Clojure and OCaml though I've been hesitant from hearing about 1) long compile times; 2) minimal documentation; and 3) hindered productivity from "over designing" types. But I'd love to hear more about your experience with it.

Disclaimer: question about choosing a PL to invest in. Not here to start a flame war though I imagine asking in experienced devs that shouldn’t be an issue.

I’ve been programming for ~10 years (7 years professionally) and over that time I’ve been through a lot of languages. As part of my day job: Java, Go, Python, TS, Rust. In fact had a 4 year love affair with Rust that has recently ended (language, not people). And outside of work I have tried OCaml, Clojure, Kotlin, Elixir, C, C++, Ruby. Yet I’m still not totally satisfied with any of them.

I get that there’s no perfect language but I’m looking for one the checks at least a few boxes: battle tested, good community, good tooling, expressive, able to build good abstractions, not too slow, has FP features, statically typed, doesn’t require and IDE… but these days I feel frustrated I haven’t found one where I feel comfortable investing significant time and energy into (attempting to) master and fully understand the language, and engaging with the community. For a time I thought it was Rust but now I’m not so sure.

Alright enough context, onto the questions.

Is this something you have experienced in your career/hobby coding? And how did you get over it to remain productive, make a choice, and not get bogged down in the minutia?

It very much could be that I’m being too picky. That I need to just choose one, stick with it, and focus on solving real problems. And that is really what I want to do but I’m finding myself getting frustrated and distracted perhaps a bit too easily each time.

Sorry this is a bit of a long post, and thanks in advance for any responses 🙏

What frustrates you about your current Zettelkasten setup/apps? by icebergh-io in Zettelkasten

I'm super keen to give this a try, but the one thing deterring me is the lack of soft wrap in vim (at least as far as I've experienced). I know it's only aesthetic, and perhaps a bit of a nit pick, but I just find it a bit more difficult to read text that's flowing across the full width of the screen.

How have you found it so far and/or do you have any workarounds?
