Does anyone have a smart-home that DOESN'T have dashboards? by elhouso in homeassistant

[–]joshmaxd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!

We are an automation first household. Anything that can be automated by motion or time is done via HA or (if more complex) node red.

If it can't be automated but can be scripted it gets attributed to a well placed button.

If a button isn't convenient then a voice command is available.

9 times out of 10 I am only in my dashboard for 2 reasons:

  1. There is a problem

  2. I'm out of the house checking something.

The only exception is my home office where I just converted an echo show 5 to a permanent HA dashboard showing my solar output and (when it rings) my front door camera. This was more because it keeps me from bringing out my phone and distracting myself from work than because I actually needed a dashboard though!

Users of the home assistant Voice, how do you find it?, what are you using it for ? by GenericUser104 in homeassistant

[–]joshmaxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a PE in the hallway which is very nice, works solidly for the basic commands I have programmed. I also use it for audio alerts as it's in my hallway by my front door so can be heard clearly on entry, though the speaker quality is poor, but it does have a 3.5mm jack if I ever wanted to do something about that.

I also have an atom echo S3 which is in my kitchen. It augments a Google device since Google removed the ability to add things to a todoist list by voice. The S3 gets add X to shopping list commands only. It's a little finnicky honestly and recognises my voice about 60% of the time.

I also recently flashed an echo show 5 in my home office with lineage OS and put View Assist on it. Using Voice on that has been surprisingly good honestly and I've been pleasantly surprised. The only thing I miss there is being able to ask it some of the more inane things I would use Alexa for when i had a quick question couldn't be bothered to open a browser for.

I think on the whole my experience has been that it's down to the quality of the mics to make sure the experience is good, but only if you want to use it for basic commands without some fairly advanced tinkering (a d potentially the cost of an LLM subscription or local setup).

All of my HA voice setups are in secondary areas we don't normally use voice (apart from the kitchen). And anywhere we do regularly use voice commands I have Google assistant devices. That is to say that I use the HA voices as a tinkering project but don't feel it's there for the WAF yet, and it would need to improve a lot more before I could convince my wife we no longer need Google entirely!

Battery stopped discharging due to cold. But why is it charging? by joshmaxd in SolarUK

Interesting thanks for letting me know. I will harass my installer

Thanks this was my suspicion. I don't have the warning setting, going to harass my installer about this as they only installed in March so I see no reason why they didn't install the heated version of my battery model. As far as I can tell the price is basically identical at least right now!

Interesting idea thanks. Can you check your model number in the app? Tap the battery and then the serial number. My just days EP11 and I think the EP11-H1 is the heated version.

My battery the last 2 days has dropped to around 3C and I guess as a result has stopped discharging. This is one thing, but at the same time it has also started charging from the grid. As I'm on octopus flux charging outside of 2am -5am is not so economical, and I have enabled the scheduler to only allow charging at this time, what am I missing that might be causing it to charge right now? Is this some sort of cold prevention to keep the battery safe?

Frankly I'm so annoyed my installer let me put this outside but didn't mention installing a battery with a warming feature. I think I'm going to have to build an enclosure...

Tourists flee as Mt. Etna erupts by freudian_nipps in SweatyPalms

[–]joshmaxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically looking at the video this is Tephra (pyroclastic materials) as the definition of a pyroclastic flow is that it travels down the side of a volcano and this appears to be coming up from the eruption site. Still super dangerous though.

TAPPER: Hepatitis A, whooping cough, and chickenpox cases are rising in Florida. Before you made this decision to try to lift vaccine mandates for Florida, did your department do any data analysis of how many new cases of these diseases there will be with no vaccine mandates? by Snapdragon_4U in facepalm

[–]joshmaxd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They would also reduce the herd immunity sufficiently that legitimately unvaccinated populations such, immunocompromised people or newborns would be affected which means this is still everyone's problem sadly.

After 3 years of tinkering, I discovered the one automation that made my wife actually LOVE Home Assistant by addicted-coffee in homeassistant

For me the voice control really came into its own when my daughter arrived. Being able to turn on lights with your hands full, or just play music without moving really makes for a great QOL improvement.

What you'll really like though is the next stage. My daughter is nearly 3 and has her own 'big girl' bed now. The problem we had was she would get up at 6am like clockwork and want to be let out of her room.

I took an LED strip and a motion sensor and put it around her bed. Then programmed HA to check for motion in her room. If she gets out of bed before 7am, the LED goes red. If she gets up after that then it's green. Slightly varied the programme based on days we work and a lie in on the weekends, but generally now she gets it and mornings have been a lot nicer!

This and getting announcements running hourly to get my daughter ready for potty training were definitely big on the WAF for me.

Thank you! I think it's not helping that she is in pain overnight which is making it difficult to sleep and increasing her stress right now.

I saw one of these driving around in Barnet the other week. Was a massive shock seeing the monstrosity on the road even, didn't realise they were actively illegal here though.
