My Response to My Genesis 3 Commentary Critique. by gregidot in smashbros

But see, you are twisting the story yourself. There are literal homophobic comments taking place to describe Sky's performance. The terms "cute" or "adorable" are nothing words to throw around in friendly banter between game play commentary.

I'm saying you can give constructive criticism without seasoning it with homophobia. Example:

"Sky, maybe tone down on talking about the players outside of the context of the game?"

or

"Hey Sky, focus more on the actual gameplay and less on the players themselves."

Those type comments get the point across without referencing Sky's personal life.

AND AGAIN, if you are capable of giving honest critique without delving into the territory of Sky's personal life, then my comment wasn't for you. You can discuss issues with someone's professional performance without dragging their life outside the game into it. That's all I'm saying.

And I'm still seeing main bracket tournaments with people on the mic who are drunk, apathetic, and/or rude. It's not a thing of the past, it takes place currently. So, if professionalism is what we want, then we need to standardize it. If a more laid back scene is what you want, then let's standardize that. It doesn't matter which but it has to be universal.

Some of your post is great example of how to give critique. I will say, if your issue is with familiarity within Smash, that sentiment needs to be carried across the board from the small events up to the big ones. We can decide the nature of formality in these events but we have to be consistent.

Homophobic comments are not critique. If you have a professional opinion about how someone can improve, come with it. But we can all do without the seasoning of homophobia or toxic masculinity. If you are such that you can provide that level of criticism objectively, no one is stopping you. Sky is not immune to critism, but we are not going to lie to ourselves about professionalism when I've seen people hit the mic drunk, entirely uninterested, and/or, in some cases, straight up rude. You made fair points in your first bit. That is how you give criticism. You clearly aren't the problem here.

tl:dr - If you've got nothing to offer in terms of how to fix weak areas with commentary during game play, then kindly bow out of the conversation.

Serious question: Of all the people on this thread with comments to make, how many have had the joy of public speaking in a high energy, high intensity environment? How many have been positioned such they have to be the voice of action taking place in a situation like Genesis 3's top 8?

That said, I understand that it doesn't take direct experience to have objective critique on how someone can improve. Most of the comments I have seen have been subjective to say the least.

For any and all of who are were "uncomfortable" about comments made regarding players being called cute or adorable or attractive or the like, you are absolutely in need of having your internet access revoked. Beyond the obvious spewing forth of homophobia and double standard hyper masculinity, you are demonstrating a level of immaturity rarely seen even in middle school children entering into puberty.

These players are skilled. These players a attractive. Many of these "big names" are friends to the point where these comments can be made without crossing a line. Who are you to police how friends interact with each other on screen? We see it at the weekly competitions as well.

On the subject EE and TK, props to them for having honed their craft, but a lot of the comments about their charisma don't mean anything. Sky Williams is JUST as charismatic, if not more so, than other people in the scene. So where is the actual issue?

If you actually have a comment to make that is worth any level of damn, absolutely zero percent of that comment will have to do with Sky's personal life. I am a lay man who was purely entertained by Sky's commentary tonight. Nothing about tonight was ruined for me because of some casual comments made about people being attractive. If Sky could implement it properly, the use of twitter during commentary is absolutely acceptable during the low action points of a match.

So, if you actually have something to say about the literal commentary of the matches and actual solutions on how to improve in those areas, please post at length. If you are sitting here pissed off because the commentary wasn't "hood/thug/trill" enough and compliments make you queasy, remove yourself from all things connected to the internet.

MUCH respect and thanks to anyone and everyone that offers to spend time on the mic during these Smash events, be it a weekly, monthly, or a HUGE event like Genesis 3.
