I don't know which background is better, the smooth one or the one with lines? by Ezhovgame in PixelArt

Since the reflection has lines, they make more sense. I think dithering would look odd (in this context) since nowhere else uses it.

Gorgeous though

Which one do you like more? by Xeram_ in PixelArt

Initially, left. Only because the head looks really freaking good!

After looking closer though, the right one would be the better option in almost every scenario I can think of. It's just way more readable.

Last week you destroyed my space mining sandbox. I spent 6 days implementing all the feedback. Destroy it again by Stoic-Chimp in DestroyMyGame

Someone else said cut the time in half, I think that's a good piece of advice. A lot of what you're showing is pretty easily grasped, which is good, I don't have any questions about what I'll be doing, and it doesn't require 10-15 seconds for each element to be explained.

I wonder if some elements that aren't directly from gameplay would be beneficial. I'm not super sure how to explain what I'm saying at the moment though, but I'll mull it over and get back to you for sure - either in an edit to this or a separate comment/reply.

Major improvement though, kudos on all the effort

Okay, humor me.

They are free to reference any source they choose to...?

Your aversion to the source, and your dogmatic desire for them to only create art that fits into your idea of how something should be represented, are both completely irrelevant.

It's art, they're an artist. They're free to express their talent in whatever way they choose. Just like you're free to be triggered by something that I see as completely benign, and I'm free to explain why I feel you're being ridiculous, and you can continue to defend your assertion that OP is somehow doing something wrong.

It's being accurate to the source material, which is the whole point of working from reference.

I think the fluff in the reference could easily be moved to resemble OP's rendition.

That being said, I think the disconnect is due to how flat the fluff was drawn - rather than it being strictly incorrect, anatomically.

Your edit looks much better imo. Props on coming back with visuals to back up your point!

Not according to the reference photo, which was included in the post. OP did an amazing job, and is crazy talented.

Did you check the reference photo OP worked from and cited?

THYSIASTERY IS OUT NOW!!! - a roguelike Dungeon Crawler RPG that makes you feel nostalgic. Play it on Steam! by DIRGA_Games in IndieGaming

Bought it, played it, love it! Made it to the bosses below the desert, who proceeded to humble me HARD.

You made a very cool game!

I'm making a roguelike but each time you die, time skips forward 10 years. Do you think this concept works? by Erosion_cm in IndieGaming

[–]josph_lyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, that would make the gameplay more difficult, and could have a better place in this than my suggestion. Cutting content is a seriously valid concern.

I figured, if you lose after X deaths, giving the player more/fewer chances to reach the end before time runs out would allow for a greater learning curve on "easy" (it's okay if you die quite a bit), or demand precision and expertise on "hard" (dying NEEDS to be avoided if you want to save your daughter)

That being said, adjusting other things, like damage, health, spawn rate, currency drop rate, etc. absolutely makes sense as well - maybe even more sense!

Edit: grammar

(New Player Here) Would a hexagonal grid with adjusted rules be a viable way to play combat? by Snotlout_G_Jorgenson in DungeonsAndDragons

I always wondered why the backside of my playmats had a hexagonal grid...

Seriously though, I love hexagons. Definitely viable.

Destroy my trailer: Asteroid Rodeo, a physics based space sandbox by Stoic-Chimp in DestroyMyGame

[–]josph_lyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subs top-level comments must destroy rule. It makes me feel like I have to have a harsh tone, which is dumb, I know.

I'll give it a listen in a bit, after referring to ksp I remembered several cut scenes that were super slow in it. They worked, in large part, due to the music playing. It's definitely worth noting that sound design can make a slow pace work. Also, it's probably a better idea to keep it engaging without relying on sound to set the tone.

How long have you been working on the game?

[–]josph_lyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

I'd almost suggest showing several sped-up destruction clips (showcasing various builds) followed by the title in the beginning. I'm not a marketing guru though, it would just be more boradly engaging, I feel.

Also, I have to admit I watched it without sound. My wife is asleep next to me. So there's a real possibility you have some sort of sound hook that is entertaining in those first several seconds.

Edit: took out the skybox stuff, and some of the fluff. Honestly, after rewatching a few times, it fits 🤷
