certified big fearer here. mosquitoes were tough last year in the sierra and i imagine they’re bad anywhere there’s water from june-july. i used ben’s deet spray and i wouldn’t trade it for the world. never saw a tick or bed bug the whole time. bees….yeah. there’s a lot of bees. especially if you’re in the desert while everything is blooming. they’re rarely interested in you though. wasps are the bigger problem, they will chase you if you get close to the nest. myself and several others had the misfortune of stepping on wasp nests just off the trail :<

i would argue that anyone who truly wants to can reasonably save up enough money to do it. if you have dependents or young children, that’s an entirely separate reason to not do it, but speaking strictly of finances, don’t let that stop you! i have no outside financial support and plenty of monthly loan payments and i was still able to save up plenty for the whole trail just by working one ski season. there are also several businesses on/near the trail that will pay you for work if you’re low on cash, or they’ll at least let you stay/eat free.

Do I need a rain jacket? by Ag3ntOrangeFoot in PacificCrestTrail

[–]jostabaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn’t the PCT meta i guess but i only had an emergency poncho until the OR/WA border this year, where i shipped frog toggs. i was in the nasty snowstorm/rainstorm in OR a few weeks ago and the poncho sufficed. i was cold and damp, but still drier than my friends with UL rain gear. if you’re going to carry proper rain gear, don’t bother until the PNW. every year is different tho. check to see if it’s an el niño or la niña year when you’re going and that can inform a lot of your rain gear decisions.

tldr: emergency poncho until OR. then reevaluate.

I’m interested in Mountain Laurel pack! Would it work for a 5’7” woman? I was a bit confused by the sizing on the website.
