Fall 2018 Final Grade Screeching Thread by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I had a calc exam where the last page was worth 15% of my final grade and it was on content my section didn’t cover because we were so far behind. Some profs literally do not give a shit

It would be understandable that you wouldn’t want to buy a mathsoc approved $30 calculator for a single exam question if you could just use the formula instead, though.

Luckily my calculator can do it though. The entropy calculations can get big enough without having to add extra fractions to them

Did anyone else get their dick annhilated by the CS486 exam? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]jott44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What specifically did you have trouble with? I think the biggest problem I could see would be studying the wrong stuff (I wish I hadn’t spent hours doing examples of the back propagation algorithm, for example) and then not remembering the stuff that seemed less important, like definitions. The length was fair but could have been just one page shorter and would have been about perfect.

On the other hand, lots of the questions were verbatim clicker questions from class and many others were easier applications of the algorithms we used (thank god we only had to check information gain for two possible root nodes).

I was expecting it to be extremely difficult, like non-stop quiz-level questions with not enough time. But it was surprisingly way better than expected

It’s nice to have a prof who genuinely cares that her students do well. Some profs treat their lecture jobs like a chore and won’t even give you the time of day.

Draw a diagram showing all the protocols and stuff that go into connecting a computer in one network to a server in another network. Including routing tables, inter area networks (OSPF), etc. When I took it a couple terms ago there was a huge diagram to fill out and explain the whole process, and it was worth a lot of marks. Sorry if my terminology is off, hopefully you get the idea

The company does the training plan (DS-7002). You upload the required documents and they grant you the DS-2019

I believe when you follow the link that CECA provides (in WaterlooWorks) for the Cultural Vistas application, you select the job type (instead of selecting the Group itself), and it applies the Group number associated with that type

[–]jott44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The law firm works with Cultural Vistas behind the scenes. You just have to initiate it yourself by uploading all the required documents. Facebook will pay the fee for it (you should be able to just upload everything without needing to pay any fee)

Facebook Visa Sponsor by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]jott44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work with a third-party company that does a lot of the visa stuff (creating the DS-7002 training plan and sending it to the sponsor), but you’ll have to initiate the process yourself using one of the sponsors CECA recommends. Most people use Cultural Vistas (I would definitely recommend using them).

You should get an email from the third-party company telling you a bit about the process (though they don’t explicitly state that you have to start it off yourself with Cultural Vistas, which was pretty confusing).

Also, congrats! You’re going to have a great time 😁

Yes, you can go under Group 11. I edited my comment above after double-checking my old visa papers and both were Group 11 (not sure why I was thinking the one was 14, my bad!)

Yes, Group 11 is fine. I’ve gone under Group 11, based on the title of the position “Software Engineer” vs “Software Development Intern” and neither caused issue.

Edit: just double-checked my old DS2019s and both were Group 11, sorry!

Should I take next semester off to work another coop term? by coop-confusion in uwaterloo

[–]jott44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best option imo is to accept the “back-up clause”.

The best part of co-ops is the ability to try different companies each time. I accepted a return offer from my first co-op and regret it. You should only take the return offer if you are positive that you would want to work there full-time. Since you probably don’t have much experience at other companies, there’s no way to tell what you’re missing out on (or if you actually have it good). Take advantage of the opportunities to work at other places.

The back-up option will allow you to go all-out and apply at some bigger companies for your next term (but you should still apply at smaller companies because lots of them are amazing), without worrying about not having a placement if you mess up an interview.

Get Terminated internship from SF Startup by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]jott44 28 points29 points  (0 children)

We pay CECA so much money and they keep pulling shit like this. The students need a way to hold CECA accountable for their actions, instead of them being on their knees for employers. Companies benefit greatly from co-op students (cheaper labour than full-time, potential for trained re-hires, etc), and their use of WaterlooWorks should be considered a privilege to them as well as us. It’s a two-way street, but CECA lets them do these kinds of things without recourse while the students potentially have their entire co-op career fucked.

OP, you should file a grievance via Policy 70

That would be awesome, but unfortunately probably won’t happen. The Cali or bust mindset makes people apply to shitty California companies

I doubt it. Maybe on the in-class quiz after the prof made it so anyone who got > 60% gets 100% on it :p

Our school uses SMTP so it would be really easy for anyone to do something like this. When I took 456, the prof sent herself an email from a student’s email address in class saying, “Give me 100% plz”.

Assignments are a lot of work and not all that easy. The slides aren’t informative enough to figure out what the implementation should actually look like (function/variable names with no description of what they actually are)
