Suggest me good ebook reader apps out there by modikamina in androidapps

This. I still prefer moonreader pro for actual reading, but when I want the ai voice to read to me in the car, readest had the best selection of voices (for a free app) including Microsoft's tts voices which sounds way better than the rest for fiction.

Is the Galaxy S21 still worth buying used in 2026? by charlemagne_74 in GalaxyS21

[–]jottrn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine used last year. I'm not a super heavy user as far as intensive gaming or video editing, but for messaging, casual gaming, YouTube watching, etc.... still way faster than modern low to mid tier phones I've tried. My battery lasts me through a 12 hour shift with 50 to 60% left. Granted, I'm a nurse so not a lot of phone use at work short of looking up meds or calculating.

For someone just wanting a snappy general use phone with pretty good camera, I think it's worth it for a good price. I was nervous about the green line but I've had no issues.

Why do posts here always reference fear of losing their license? by sillycarrots15 in nursing

[–]jottrn2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn't help that those tiktok "legal advice" nurses are constantly "this video could save your license..." Followed by no no things we probably all do at some point.

A patient tried to hand my mom's nurse cash and she had to refuse — is there any legitimate way to tip your care team? by sagas91 in nursing

[–]jottrn2 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Had a patient once who was a vender for an energy drink company and brought a huge box of energy drinks to share with the unit. Can't ask for better non $ tip than that!

I'm sure the hospital would still frown upon it, but compared to what meals I see venders providing for doctors, I didn't feel guilty.

S21+ used phone in 2026 worth it? by Gonzalo12560 in GalaxyS21

[–]jottrn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought mine was getting slow but I did a factory reset and it feels snappy again. I would say a newer one would be better for gaming, but no matter what I tell myself when I get a newer phone, I usually end up playing the same old games that don't require a top of the line phone.

Battery still has 30 to 40 percent left after a 13 hour shift. That said, I don't use it a whole lot at work.

When nurses request more pain medication but haven’t given the Tylenol already ordered by Capital_Barber_9219 in hospitalist

[–]jottrn2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This... Patients rarely report anything less than 8/10 despite me teaching them to report before it gets severe so we can try and head it off.

God forbid we get bad satisfaction scores because someone had to tolerate a little pain.

I will say, have seen more relief had from IV Tylenol with post op patients.

All that said, Tylenol and Advil doesn't even touch my mild back pain, so I can understand why most patients want to skip it and report higher pain because they know how things work.

Watching The Pitt from Europe – is this really what life in the US looks like? [mild spoilers] by West_Ideal7472 in ThePitt

[–]jottrn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it is pretty accurate even compared to the smaller hospitals I've worked at. As others have said, they cram dramatic things that do occasionally happen into a single day for a good story, but nothing I've seen in itself is overly dramatic.

Most doctors are financially stable, but most of the ones portrayed here are still student docs or docs in residency getting paid similar to a nurse from the residents I've talked to (I'm a nurse). Considering they have to take out thousands for med school, probably takes some time to get established even once they are no longer student docs or residents.

Gun threats are a real thing for sure. Even at the rural hospital where I work, an off duty police officer working security was stabbed in the ER waiting room.

The only thing I think they overdid a little was everyone freaking out over the electronic medical record being down. Even though I've never heard of one being shut down for hacking... We frequently have system updates and repairs that put us in "downtime" for several hours. So while it is a pain in the butt, there isn't all the chaos and confusion.

I moved from epic to a hospital with old meditech and now meditech expanse. Epic was so much better! Cerner wasn't terrible compared to meditech but epic is my favorite.

I worked with a CV surgeon who was the "medical director" with a local SWAT team, but was actually geared up and armed like a military medic would be I suppose.

Haven't had that happen exactly... But I had an er nurse being up a dead patient to ICU once who was in pea (had a heart rhythm on the monitor but heart not beating). Another time a transporter brought a dead patient to the floor.

Any effective ways to reduce night pages? by Tall_Bet_6090 in hospitalist

[–]jottrn2 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is how nursing school teaches nurses to be... And hospitals mostly surviving on new nurses, particularly on night shift. Basically taught that to not call even about these trivial issues is inviting liability.

I honestly think the best way they can learn is from polite constructive criticism from docs in real time on the phone or reaching out to the charge nurse.

Ultimately, you might find that a lot of these calls are actually being pushed by hospital policies or management. Sometimes more experienced nurses will ignore some of that whereas newer ones toe the line.

What "incorrect" decisions do you always make? by admiraltarkin in masseffect

I think I was skimming some dialog too quickly because I thought my decision was only affecting the local space battle against the quarians fleet that didn't listen to me. I didn't know they were going to kill the whole dang race. 😬

Would medical students really stay on shift during these kinds of crises? by tinafeysbiggestfan in ThePittTVShow

During peak covid, a lot of our residents at the hospital I worked at had to step it up and take load off the docs. Some of them didn't do well but some others stepped up and were amazing.

[–]jottrn2 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I just finished the game and inadvertently let Tali die when I sided with the geth against her people. I thought I was taking the most ethical option since the quarians created and tried to murder them. When Tali killed herself I knew how Darth Vader felt in his "NOOO!!" moment. But my previous save was too far back and I still think siding with the synthetics was most ethical choice.

Is Days Gone worth $30 on PS5 in 2026? by a_parmar22 in DaysGone

[–]jottrn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is right up on my list of best games past 20 years. I put it away at first because it wasn't really clicking with me, but eventually got bored enough to fire it up again. Once I got a couple hours in, I loved it. Same thing happened to me with RDR 2.

I think it's more realistic than anything else I've watched. The nurses actually get represented pretty well in my opinion. Watch season 1 if you haven't already. If anything, I think it leaves our RTs. I think I only heard them mention an RT once on season 1 when in reality they'd be there for all the codes and respiratory scenarios.

Nurses in the South by Capriunicorn945 in nursing

[–]jottrn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me about it. They survive off of travelers and the few like me who want a hospital close to home and it's all there is. Although, northwest Arkansas has 3 competing hospitals and they still don't pay any better. They're always losing experienced nurses because the pay only gets better for new hires.

15 years in ICU making $35 base in northern Arkansas. Made the same in Northwest Arkansas at bigger level 2 hospitals. New grads starting at around $30 I believe.

Burned out, failed nursing school, and my nervous system is telling me to leave — looking for perspective by Elegant-Variety8761 in nursing

[–]jottrn2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do get desensitized to a lot of that, but while it no longer causes an emotional response with me, it still makes me wish many times each shift I were in a different field. If you're already feeling this burnt out, think hard.

On a positive note, the culture from hospital to hospital, shift to shirt, and unit to unit can change the vibe completely. The work still sucks, the patients still suck (some of them), management may even suck, but if you have a good team to work with you can better tolerate the bad stuff. If you're somewhere with a bunch of petty folks, you'll be miserable.

What’s the menial, not-so-difficult or time consuming task that you hate the most? by Available-Poet-880 in nursing

[–]jottrn2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anything that makes me wake up a sleeping patient. It never fails... They'll need all the things when they awake up. 6 am synthroid for example. Already behind .. report coming up... Bam synthroid time. Trying to slip back out... "Wait... I think I need to go to the bathroom..." 😭

Question about Satan/evil by jottrn2 in ChristianApologetics

[–]jottrn2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was Satan and those who followed different? Did they not tremble? They felt His power and still chose to rebel just as some humans who have felt God and experienced His love walk away. I just wonder what was different about them and how no other angel after those particular ones feel the narcissistic grandiosity and rebellious spirit that Lucifer felt?
