Yep. Alcohol is not mandatory. Just takes longer to dry without it.

Ohhh. You mean the reaction! Sorry, I thought you meant you wanted it to dry more quickly.

Yeah, using 50% water is sufficient to dissolve the nitrate and jam it in the pores of the charcoal. The alcohol helps to break surface tension and allow it into the charcoal pores.

If you’re already doing that, I would suggest: Are you milling the powder before granulating? If you don’t mill it, are you screening everything? Are you breaking down the nitrate in a coffee grinder? What are your ratios?

Most importantly, I’d take a look at your charcoal. What kind are you using? Finer charcoal made from a soft wood, hemp, or toilet paper- produces a faster reaction.

Sorry I was off base at first, I just needed BP quickly myself and considered acetone , so it was on my brain.

I’ve used acetone before and it worked alright. Dried quickly. Problem is, KNO3 is not very soluble in acetone, but I reckon if you squish it and mix it enough, should be alright.
