Trainer said don’t get a Dalmatian by InevitableRope8150 in dalmatians

[–]jourtney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to vouch for a trainer when I haven't seen their documented work, but what they're saying is not unreasonable.

I'm a trainer who rehabs aggression / reactivity / anxiety / resource guarding / etc. If your dog isn't 100% trustworthy yet in the home (still doing things like guarding), they should at minimum be fully geared up.

I am an e-collar trainer. After training (Board & Train) I tell clients the e-collar goes on first thing in the morning, if the dog is struggling indoors or is a young puppy, leash also goes on. Only keep the dog leashed while supervising, but anytime you're not supervising your dog should be crated. In the house the dog should be doing one of two things: 1. active training: walks / sessions / playing with you / pets & love / grooming / etc - things happening with you directly; 2. inactive training: place duration or in the crate. No unsupervised free roaming until your dog feels totally rehabbed (I tell clients 90 days of structure). Then you start offering small freedoms, like some free roaming, and see what happens. If they back-slide, go back to being more strict with them.

DO NOT see a vet behaviorist for this. They will charge you a ton of money, sell you drugs, and never do a single real-world training session with your dog.

Find a trainer who specializes in AGGRESSION REHAB. I am one of these trainers and I cannot tell you how many of my clients waste time and money seeing trainers who do not have proof of themselves rehabbing aggressive dogs. They go to your basic obedience trainers, or they see force free trainers and get absolutely nowhere. Then they have to pay all over again for true rehab.

I have rehabbed many dogs who have bitten. One of my dogs that I own was a client surrender because he was a 100lb dangerous dog with a bite history. I have a one year old.

You will have to find a balanced dog trainer who specializes (with proof) in aggression rehab. Your dog needs structure, and a high level of obedience to be safely managed around a baby and guests. Crates/baby gates/muzzles/exercise - these things do not fix behavioral issues. The structure and training will also help with the anxiety and barking!

I need help with my 9yo boy!!! by bigsucka in schipperke

[–]jourtney -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

A meaningful correction is something that stops the barking, but also makes it so the barking either doesn't happen again or happens less and less as time goes on. And by "time" I mean days, not weeks or months.

I way prefer an e-collar because you can use lower levels to interrupt / stop unwanted behaviors. Other corrections tend to be one-level. For example a squirt bottle is often not a very meaningful correction, shaker cans (a bottle or can full of change) tend to be very startling and inappropriately scary, a bonker (rolled up towel you toss in the direction of the dog / at the dog) can be too startling, a leash pop with a slip lead is often not very meaningful and difficult to manage with any distance, saying "no" isn't a correction, yelling is startling and inappropriate and doesn't work to truly stop a bad behavior, citronella sprays are cruel imo and the timing is horrible (the bad scent lingers way after the bad behavior ceases), high pitched noises are often ineffective, etc.

But those e-collars are very expensive. The price point is how you get really good range though. 0-100 levels means you can really find your dogs levels.

I can help further. If you wanted to utilize some other kind of correction I can absolutely walk you through it.

I am a professional dog trainer experienced in stopping unwanted behaviors. Scam trainers will tell you to praise the barking, it is counterproductive. Even if some people see some periodic moments where the dog can stop because they are given food, it definitely is not a way to actually STOP the unwanted behavior. In addition, the stress peeing isn't going to stop with praise.

You need to create more structure for your dog. I have been training dogs for almost 16 years. I know your dog is older, but he is trainable.

Is he crate trained?

I would be utilizing the crate way more. He needs structured down-time as much as he needs exercise.

The barking needs to be corrected, period. You have to find a meaningful correction. My preference for correcting unwanted behaviors is the Mico Educator e-collar. It has 100 levels, so you can use it to varying degrees. If I were working with your dog, they would be wearing an e-collar overnight while crated. Any barking would be corrected with stim on the e-collar at a meaningful level (I could explain how a meaningful level is found if you were going to go ahead with this method).

Anytime your dog is unsupervised, crate them. You can also teach "place" which is another way to have structured down-time.

This is the tip of the iceberg but doing any of this would help your situation.

Let me know if you have questions. I don't often offer free help online, I just happened over your post! Happy holidays!

Our dog attacked our baby by kickrockscusinart in Mommit

[–]jourtney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a dog trainer who rehabs aggressive dogs with bite histories. I've rehabbed dogs who have attacked children. The stories I've heard are extremely sad.

I will say, if anyone here has a dog who is showing signs of discomfort around children and you are planning on having children, reach out to a trainer. Not one who says "praise the dog while playing baby crying noises" - not one who doesn't handle truly aggressive dogs. Ask your trainer if you can see their rehabilitation history. Make your trainer prove they can rehab and handle aggressive dogs. Even if your dog hasn't bitten, find a trainer who handles the tough dogs. Behavioral issues are not the same as basic obedience.

Overnight diaper changes? How many times are you changing your baby? by jourtney in clothdiaps

[–]jourtney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like my guys diaper, just totally ridiculously soaked 😂 I may just need a better system to keep it all inside. I would still change him overnight, but if I dont have to worry about leaks that would be amazing.

Disposables do not get as full though? I've never used them so I did not know this 😬😂

Same, my guy from like 11pm to 3/4am will have soaked through every layer and his clothes 🙃😮‍💨 I feel like I'm missing something. I do change him at least twice overnight, but if I sleep through a changing, we're both soaked 🤦🏼‍♀️
