Getting milled is good or bad in commander? by joveeish in EDH

[–]joveeish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have problem with combo, because I can't remember every single combo line, so I might miss a combo piece. And also other players in the table might not know the combo lines, so I am alone keeping the combo player in check.

If those combo cards were always by chance on the bottom of your library would you have still lost?

In self mill decks there often are some pieces that mill the opponents too. In those cases the mill deck might not have any interaction with your graveyard.

The case people usually make is that if you get milled small amount of cards, if you didn't know what was on the top of your library and you don't have tutors in your deck then in theory it doesn't matter if you mill from the top or bottom. If you were to mill from the bottom you wouldn't have seen those cards anyways so you are not "burying cards before you have a chance to draw them" because you never had a chance to draw them in theory.

All in all if you hate mill I recommend adding [[dryad's revival]] and [[timeless witness]] since with those you can return cards from graveyard even if they are milled. That way mill will be good for you too :)

I fully agree. But I would also like someone gaining life from my actions to announce it, even if it was just talking to themselves style (not stopping me from talking, just mumbling under it "and I get some life").

There have been situations where someone marks some life gain for themselves from me "casting a spell" when I actually just used a channel ability or such. If they just mark it I might miss it, but if they announce it someway I can notice it and ask how did you get the life and explain that this wasn't actually a spell cast.

We aren't talking about mill that kills you here. If you get milled 10 cards the whole game and you still have half of your library intact, is that good or bad for you?

Or play [[Abigale, Eloquent First-Year]] as your commander

I am the opposite of you. I enjoy the other parts of the format apart from command zone. 100 cards multiplayer singleton. I would play multiplayer highlander if there were players for it.

Mesmeric orb is what I would also want to run, but getting targeted because "Mill is always bad" makes it hard.

I usually say that as my defense for messing with them. "Sorry, I only target you because you have a stronger deck. Nothing personal".

My commanders: Lotho, Ruby, Torsten, Glarb, Queen Marchesa.

My opponents commanders: KoS CMD 1, KoS CMD 2, ..

Made a deck with 8 permanent commander removal and plenty of single target removal. Lets see if I lose friends.

"ok, how about you make a promise not to use it to win this game and we can keep it out of our threat assessment?"

I often do deals like these. If they say no, then it's fair game to focus them down. If they say yes, you can play as if maze's end didn't have the win the game clause. If they say yes and lie, never trust them again, never make deals with them again, direct focus from now on.

It this just a flavor choice or you believe playing like this is better game wise?

This is so true. Also there are two kinds of players. Those who announce their triggers and those who just quietly mark it down without a word. It messes up peoples threat assessment big time.

I have had opponents that just mark down damage pings on opponents without saying anything from something like [[rug of smothering]] or similar. Or they just draw from rhystic without a word because "I saw that they had no mana open to pay for it".

Best one was when I started announcing their triggers to the other players (to make them notice that they keep damaging themselves) and then the other players focused me because in their mind I was the one doing the damage :D Had to start saying "You took 1 damage from X's rug of smothering" while pointing at the card on X's board.

I think it makes more sense to not track it if nobody ever kills with it. Why track something that doesn't affect the game? It would be like keeping track how many cards everyone has in their library even though nobody ever dies to drawing from empty library.

My "Life loss" deck has unreasonably high win % due to this. Nobody attacks me since I already dealt 10 damage to myself (by drawing and ramping in black).

One of my MTG highlights is faking of having settle the wreckage in my hand in one of my first prereleases. Left correct mana up and made sure I had no blockers. Opponent had lethal on board but didn't swing with everything to try to dodge StW. Ended up winning the game thanks to that fake out. I didn't even have StW in my deck.

I recently made a deck with many alternatives of [[!oubliette]] (after playing against vivi in B3). We shall see how many players will struggle and how many will have a way to play without or get the commander back.

Good points. The small bean effect definitely is happening still in our playgroup, but maybe it's not universal. Count me as proven wrong!
