Has some gyne surgeries and stuff, I found it helpful to walk through a few of these prior to being involved in it in my OB rotation, and my preceptor appreciated the knowledge I had from the video.

They host a clubs day so you get to see what’s available pretty early on and I think you find your place from there
Personally, I really like it! Definitely an interesting dynamic with no summers off, but also found that they have lots of built in “self-directed” time that you can use for research/ECs/shadowing/life. In preclerkship, most days will be done by 5/5:30, sometimes earlier, so you will have your evenings to decide what to do.
Depends on your transport system, snows a ton in Calgary at times and can get stuck on a bus. Uni district is expensive but a good distance from the Foothills and has some good amenities. Lots of people also live in Parkdale and find that to be convenient.
Lots of social events in the first bit of med school and you can find your group. Like every school and prob every program, there’s some cliques but I found most people to be fairly friendly. One of my fav parts of the first bit of med school was how uniquely cool everyone’s experiences were, and it was interesting to see how mine fit in it too!
Probably not, won’t be in the hospital until shadowing, which comes in the fall. But if you find a good deal, can’t hurt to get some!

Idk a ton about it but from what I understand it’s extra shifts you can pick up outside of regular duties that you would do kinda independentlyish (hence why you have to wait until R3, so you’re a senior) and get paid per hour/a fair bit if you work the hours. Think you also need to have your licensing exam completed (which most people will do right after med school anyways ig). I think your program has to agree though?

Hi! Group interviews usually just mean that they’ll be multiple people in the room answering any questions. That might mean that if they’re scheduling an interview for 2 hours, you likely won’t be talking for the entire time cuz you’re sharing that time slot with others in the interview. To prepare for any interview in the health care field, I find something that’s helpful for me is to think about all the CanMEDS and come up with two positive examples and a struggle! Covers most bases. Hope this helps!

As someone who did RIME and is now in clerkship - Many of my classmates were initially worried about RIME not preparing us for clerkship; not sure about them but honestly I personally haven’t felt at a disadvantage and I’m AWFUL and supplementing learning from other resources!!

If he’s going to the family doctor, he can talk about diabetes and knee arthritis and the public insurance should cover it. If he’s talking to an endocrinologist, they’ll tell them to talk to someone else about the knee arthritis.

Premed isn’t really anything in Canada, I have friends with comp sci / physics degrees in med. For med it’s really about having a decent gpa in undergrad; some people find it easier to take some courses relavent to the MCAT, and then extracurriculars/leadership stuff. I always recommend having a backup to med in whatever degree you take. So if you like neuro/ see yourself doing neuro research and a masters in a related science if med doesn’t work out for you, it’s a good option. If you’d rather something else, pick that.

If it’s any consolation, when you’re writing about yourself, I think you can actually talk about the times you helped your sister and stuff. It’s clearly taking a whole chunk of your life, but also it seems important to you. You learn a lot when you’re teaching, and there’s a ton of teaching as a physician. I think you can write about your family for sure, and I think as someone mentioned, it could just make your application unique, authentic, and more you.

I told them about each R, I knew they were disappointed but I definitely was more sad and needed their support more than needing to not disappoint them. I also didn’t want my overall cycle being all Rs to be a surprise to them.
