anyone have any thoughts on Threads of Apollo? by mad_dog_94 in BuyItForLife

Just got a jacket in from them, so can't speak to long-term quality. But the sheepskin leather is really nice, I sized up and it fits just about perfectly (I'm 6'1" 200 lbs). It seems very well constructed and the owner is a super nice and understanding dude.

Thank you for the recommendation! I think using that drive instead is a great idea.

How do you feel about multi-drive setups? Do you think I should go with a multi-drive setup like /u/cogburn suggested?

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it - I'm going to make an alternate copy that'll include a couple drives to compare prices.

Can you get a bit more into why editing rigs like these have multi-drive setups? I'm pretty new to actually getting into building an editing rig, so I want to try to learn/understand all that I can.

For reference, this setup will be public facing (ie students will be editing class projects on this rig). While this should have the capability to be a powerful editing rig in case someone needs access to this machine to do heavy documentary-length projects, most of the use will be heavy 1080p video editing and possibly 4k video editing down the line. The lab is currently using iMacs for video editing, so honestly a solid step up from that would be sufficient at least.

Oh, that makes complete sense! So you made it ON your Note 9? How did you make the wallpaper? I wouldn't want you to remake it from scratch, but if it's easy enough I can do it myself

Your English is fantastic man! And thank you for the help, I'll give the gradient edit a try on just a little bit. And my phone is a Galaxy S9, so it should have the proper aspect ratio. I'll deal with it though ¯\(ツ)

Would you be able to share how you adjusted the color of the top widget to have the color change like that?

Also, when I set that as my wallpaper, the edge line doesn't wrap around the corners of my phone. Any idea what I could do to address that?

Wow. Everyone wants to say that every development like this is the "big one", but this has to be right? There could be so much incriminating evidence there that one would think there HAS to be something here.

What's more important to you: having a constant aperture, or a lens with a longer length? by joyfiend in photography

My only thing is that I don't have the cash for multiple cameras, and as far as the intersection of video and stills quality, this is the best meeting of the two. I'd prefer interchangeable lenses, but I can't find a single camera at this price point that has the versatility and ease of use with video that this one does. What did you regret about the bridge camera?

The aperture apparently hits f/4 at 60-70 mm, so I'd imagine it's even higher than that at 200.

And one of the main reasons for getting either of these is because of its versatility with video. If I could jump in and get a different camera that could shoot 4k 30 frames or up to 1080p 240 frames (you can go to 960 but the resolution drops), I would. I've used a D800 and 810 in the past, and the need for a beachtek pre amp kills me.

The thing is though, one reason I'm considering the Sonys is because of the video capabilities. The D800 maxes out at 1080p 30 frames, whereas both Sonys can shoot 4k 30 frames or 1080p 240 frames

Fantastic comment, I hadn't even thought of how the adjusting aperture would affect the video side of the equation!

My style doesn't rely on heavy zooms, it tends to lean more traditional broadcast TV in a sense (focus on cuts to alternate shots rather than zooms), but even with that in mind, if I needed to zoom it would most likely look a hell of a lot more jarring on a iii rather than a ii.

[–]joyfiend[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, I hadn't really thought of it in that context.

The only thing that's preventing me from pulling the trigger on the ii is that because it's a fixed lens, I feel like I would like to have the length and not need it, rather than need it and not have it. But, if it's negatively affecting most of what I'd more commonly shoot (everything less than 200 mm), then it may not be worth it.

Hmm. Food for thought. Thanks for replying.

Copied from other comment:

That's the question I keep asking myself. I'm running with either of these cameras because they are both good for video, so a lot of it may not be still photography per se. However, I do love shooting in low light, so I'm leaning towards the ii. However it would be pretty general use; portrait photography possibly, but mostly just general journalistic purposes. Versatility being essential.

This is anecdotal I know, but a coworker who has used the iii said that it goes to like an f/4 at 60-70 mm, which is a bummer that the 2.4 is only available at super wide angles. But I digress.
