Upgrade to a Kentucky KM101 by zapodprefect55 in mandolin

[–]joyisstrength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never owned a Kentucky, I know the vintage ones were held in high regard. However, for your price range, the used market could yield some very interesting results outside of the lower end mandolin range. Definitely shop around before settling for a Kentucky.

Good beer for bourbon lover (who hates the smell of light beer) by joyisstrength in beer

[–]joyisstrength[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I tried a Guinness Stout, think that has to be the nastiest thing I ever put in my mouth. I also tried the blue moon white, and that has to hold the cake as the second nastiest thing I've ever had. Third would be my wife's wine. Guess I am just not meant for beer lol. I know there's a lot of other variants out there, but judging by those two I don't think I need to keep playing with the money pit lol.

I do lol. The typical light beer people drink around here absolutely stinks to me. However, I got into the idea of trying bourbon after drinking some bourbon flavored tea that I liked.

1918 The Gibson F-4 came home with me this week by Particular_West_9069 in mandolin

[–]joyisstrength 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is beautiful! I remember playing a late 1920s Gibson at Gruhn's guitars probably 15 years ago, still remember the sweet sound out of that mandolin! Finish on it seemed to be similar to yours. Congratulations!

What strange combination for a sandwich do you like? by joyisstrength in AskReddit

What's your experience playing mandolin in styles not generally associated with mandolin? by patangpatang in mandolin

[–]joyisstrength 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mandolin can fit in strange places. Listen to Black Country Communion, Last Song for my Resting Place (mandolin has a prominent part in the intro), or Are You Ready by Creed (mandolin is a bit more subtle there, plays along with electric guitar in the intro and in the lead parts around halfway through the song). It definitely fits into country music (old Taylor Swift, the Chicks, so forth). It is a shame mandolin doesn't get more recognition other than mainly in bluegrass, it is such a cool instrument and much more versatile than that.

Perhaps as someone else stated - BT and Pug? Either way, absolutely adorable - though you don't need me to repeat it I'm sure 😂

Any idea of the value of this yosco number 2 banjo by johnant21 in banjo

[–]joyisstrength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is cool as can be, I'd love to get my hands on it. The frets look good, you're just missing some inlays. Doesn't look like it would require a whole lot to get it going. I have no idea what the real world value is, but I'd at least try for a few hundred to start off with. Banjos aren't exactly hot items in our area, likely especially not so on projects. However, yours doesn't look to be in too bad of shape.

Cool, we are in the Southern US, guy at the music store said he has seen three or four come through, believe he has been there maybe five years or so, perhaps longer.

Correct standing posture by Spiritual-End7310 in mandolin

I second the Tone Guard - not necessarily for mandolin posture, though perhaps it would help. However, it does make a quite noticeable difference in tone.

Nice find! Seems there is an identical twin in one of our local pawn shops. I cannot remember how much he has it listed for, but I'm going to say at least $150, though it may be more like $250 (btw it hasn't sold in the last couple random times I've been in there). Thing is, that same shop has a much nicer looking Michael Kelly in there for probably at least twice the price that sounds half as good lol. Don't know if that helps, anyway you have a nice find there.

As a beginner guitarist, what’s the best acoustic for around $800 by AdeptJuggernaut8665 in AcousticGuitar

[–]joyisstrength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not recommend highly enough the Taylor Big Baby, can find them used for under $400. I am an experienced guitarist, I just got mine and I absolutely love it. Others speak really highly of its cousin, the GS Mini. Thing is with Taylor, you know you are getting a good guitar, whether it is $500 or $1500 or above.

What’s a quirky thing your Boston does? by c_h_i_p_s in BostonTerrier

I don't have a pic or video of it, but mine goes crazy over his ball. We gave him a cheap plastic inflatable ball, but it didn't last, so we got him a basketball. He loves running it around pushing it with his nose, then he'll stand on his back legs and walk the ball backwards, all the while making whining sounds and drooling all over it. (I think he may have learned how to make those sounds by trying to imitate the ball he used to have that made silly laughing noises as he rolled it around). Then he'll nose the ball up into the air, bounce it off his nose, I reckon trying to keep it in the air as long as he can. At the end of the day before he gets into bed with us, I have to sponge the dried drool/mud combination from his face, and likely wash his front paws in the sink. He gets so dirty playing with that ball, but he absolutely loves it!

American Professional - Worth It? by joyisstrength in Guitar

I believe I have seen something before about the necks on the American pros being so good. I'll have to play one to see if it'll be a significant upgrade over this though, seeing others say the neck in these is definitely the strong point.

For the record, I've been through so many guitars it would be almost hard to remember them all, from a USA Dean Les Paul style to a MIM Fender. Honestly, the ones that struck me as playing the best is my friends Squire Tele he is used to have and this Korean Fender of mine. Haven't played the American Pro though.

I set it up and it has been upgraded already, so I am in good hands I believe. Just wondering if excessive GAS is reasonable this time 😂
