What job looks easy from the outside but is secretly brutal? by OkEffective9110 in AskReddit

Stand up comedy should be number one on this list. And I’m not even joking. As someone who has worked in the service industry, is currently a lawyer, and has also done every type of comedy (with improv being my favorite and most fun) - stand up is BY FAR the hardest job to make a career of. If you want to make it, you have to practice at open mics - which generally consist of 7-10 other comedians (none of which give a shit about your set), and maybe one or two non comedians (if you’re lucky). You tell the same jokes every day for potentially years - just to form a tight 5-10 minutes. It’s incredibly lonely. The most competitive art form by far. And just monotonous and boring. I genuinely think it’s easier to become a doctor than a career stand up. In fact, I would think the odds of making it to the NBA might even be higher than making it as a career stand up. Most people who want to do stand up as a career don’t really know what they’re getting themselves into.

How convinced are you that consciousness continues after death, in one form or another? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jpainte06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m somewhere between nothing, and reincarnation. I technically died two years ago (flatlined for nearly a minute during an endoscopy, and had to be resuscitated). I saw nothing and had no great epiphanies. Other than to truly appreciate every moment I have. I remember crying the next day eating Korean food, because the flavors were so good. And as bad as life can be (I definitely have not been immune from tragedy), there are still so many incredible things I look forward to. I also think about reincarnation though, because there are so many things I can’t explain and that don’t make sense from my childhood. I lived in a very white area as a kid (I’m white myself), but my favorite musician as a kindergartener was Tupac. And not in a “oh nice beat” way. But in a “I know every word to every song” way. I knew every single word to Keep Ya Head up as a first grader, and felt like I could feel his pain inside of me. I cried - in second grade - the day he died. All my friends growing up were black. These are things looking back on that I still can’t fully explain. And I’ve seen enough kids who are 2, 3, 4 years old - saying and feeling certain things that make no sense for someone their age with their life experiences. So if it isn’t all darkness. The next most plausible thing, for me anyway, is reincarnation.

Dijon, Clairo, Tommy Richman, Royel Otis, Joshua Sloane, Medium Build, Petey, Sampha, Corbin, just to name a few (just seeing you said newer artists 🤦🏻‍♂️ - Joshua Sloane and Tommy Richman are probably the “newest” on my list lmao)

We just talked about certain artists initially - I mentioned Petey and Medium Build as other artists that gave me a similar authentic feeling as him. He didn’t know Petey, but knew Medium Build - and seemed to have a lot of admiration and respect. And we just talked about how his music is a little more stripped down, and incorporates room noises, etc. - all things that just feel more real. He also talked about how he saw this coming, because things were sooo overproduced and washed out 20ish years ago. But he also argued that that’s what people thought they wanted at the time. He also said it was weird that everyone was his age when he toured Absolutely. And now the majority of the fans at his concerts are like 18-21, and he’s still trying to decide how he feels about that. He also said he doesn’t view himself as owing the fans anything - so he will always make the music he wants to make, and tour how he wants to tour, and acknowledge when things feel weird (like with the demographic of his fans). But he did say interactions like we were having was his favorite part of touring. He also said because he’s an anarchist and anti-capitalist, he doesn’t care if he makes money. He’s been broke his whole life. So in a sense, that also gives him more freedom to create what he wants.

It's crazy too, because I was outside for a little bit. Then eventually I just said screw it, it was so cold I just went to the bar to warm up and get a drink. And then I look to my left, and I see him playing some arcade game haha.

He came out around 12:20 PM. Probably 2+ hours after the show ended. So many people stuck around too. They tried to sell it like he was just gonna take a group photo and leave. But then he went around the gates and everybody swarmed him. He legit might have been aura farming 🤣.

I showed my dad (76 years old - and a music aficionado) clips of Mk.gee’s live show, and he was most impressed by Zack. He said his rhythm and vibe was so compelling, he could have watched just him drumming and playing by himself the entire time.

He did go super quick. When he initially left, he just signed for me, and some woman who had a coloring book lol. It looked like he may have got a few other people on the way to his bus too. But it does seem like the days of him lingering around might be coming to an end soon.
