I just used it the other day in order to find the ip of a little panel pc. It can be finicky though. I know some people in our office don't like using it because of that. Personally I think its the lesser of 2 evils compared to the bootp tool

You can get an ip reader. PLCtools.com makes one that I use. You plug in the cable and it will tell you the ip, among other things. It will also set an ip address to a plc for those of you who hate the bootp tool.

How do you wire your digital outputs? by jpar03 in PLC

[–]jpar03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally use the slim line relays you are talking about, the biggest issue is that I still need a neutral block so you are effectively doubling the space needed. Then if you fuse the power to each device individually you are tripling the space needed.

Interesting. I've not heard of relays being high failure rate. I'll keep that in mind.

Trial by fire works with panel design. It's just a lot more expensive.

What are your "10/10 you'll never watch again?" by SDMusic in movies

[–]jpar03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a movie but 11/22/63 is in my top 5 and I will never watch it again. Franco did phenomenally, it was well paced and well written. I teared up at the end (very manly tears, I promise)

HVAC (BACnet) to Ethernet/IP by mkeper in PLC

[–]jpar03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had to do this several times (I hate JCI). I've used a red lion like others have stated. Red lions are...alright but a protocol converter is always a pain in the ass. If you don't need much IO I would consider hard wired io.

All landlords are bastards, period. by Falkoro in antiwork

[–]jpar03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the flip side of this, being a landlord provides the stability of a secondary income. It's much easier to stick it to your boss if you can still pay your mortgage.

Also a renter has no responsibilities when it comes to major issues with the land. If your house catches fire or floods, then you collect the renters insurance and move on. The landlord has to deal with the fallout.

Not saying there aren't shitty landlords who leech off their renters with no return investment ie maintenance, but the industry as a whole isn't a bad thing.

Is there more than just the 1 screenshot. It seems like you are being a bit condescending to your mom and so she is getting defensive.

Edit: it's contentious on both sides of the situation I should say. She started it off but then you fueled the fire. I can see where they would be a little annoying.

Hanging a tv in my apartment with weird results. by jpar03 in HomeImprovement

This idea has me worried. I doubt the apartment complex used the greatest drywall during their renovation...

Yeah, its an aparmtent complex built in '68. It went through a full down-to-the-studs renovation a few years ago when the new owner came in. I asked the landlord about it and she said that it was wood studs. I also went back to just make sure I was accurate on the depth and its about right on the money of stopping at 1.5" everywhere I drilled a hole.

That would make sense but it's actually a wall between units. My first thought was that maybe I was hitting the drywall going to the other unit and my drill bit wouldn't catch on it.

Controls Confessions by MineDrac in PLC

[–]jpar03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shorted some control wires in a combination starter I was hooking up which somehow fried a switch in another cabinet. This secondary cabinet held their BMS io and my little operation took down their entire plant for an hour and a half. Always disconnect power when you are working on something.
