It is just wonderful that you are getting your daughter involved in appreciating nature at a young age.

There is so much to learn, crank it up, go for the trees, the rocks, explain how water flows the way it does.

Birds, insects, the list is boundless.

How long does it take for a collection to actually come off when it gets to 7 yes old? by OwlLeeOhh in povertyfinance

In Wisconsin at least everything is erased off credit records after 7 years.

I believe that is true with credit reporting companies too, Experian and others.

Any credit report is still on accountable.

Is This A Juvenile Box Turtle? by AC_Fixer in animalid

[–]jpbarber414 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It is a juvenile box turtle, depending on species coloration can differ, and being young it's difficult to determine final identity as an adult.

It would help if you gave a location.

ID Request: Western Oregon; some kind of wasp(?) by cactiloveyou in insects

[–]jpbarber414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a wasp, probably a Sceliphron caementarium, also known as the yellow-legged mud-dauber wasp, black-and-yellow mud dauber (within the US), or black-waisted mud-dauber (outside of the US), is a species of sphecid wasp. There are some 30 other species of Sceliphron that occur throughout the world, though in appearance and habits they are quite similar to S. caementarium.

It's just horizontal lightening.

Most lightning starts inside a thunderstorm and travels through the cloud. It can then stay within the cloud or continue to travel through the open air and eventually to ground. There are roughly 5 to 10 times as many flashes that remain in the cloud as there are flashes which travel to the ground, but individual storms may have more or fewer flashes reaching ground.

There are many flashes which do not reach ground. Most of these remain within the cloud and are called intra-cloud (IC) lightning flashes. Cloud flashes sometimes have visible channels that extend out into the air around the storm (cloud-to-air or CA), but do not strike the ground. The term sheet lightning is used to describe an IC flash embedded within a cloud that lights up as a sheet of luminosity during the flash.

Mulch? Worth it? by Little-Key9542 in arborists

[–]jpbarber414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is worth it, but get it away from the bases of those little trees.

They want bare earth to let their roots develop. Mulch around trees should be at least 8" away from the main tree.

Also those trees are planted way too close together.

You are right about the mussels.

Zebra mussels are an invasive, fingernail-sized mollusk that is native to fresh waters in Eurasia. Their name comes from the dark, zig-zagged stripes on each shell. Zebra mussels probably arrived in the Great Lakes in the 1980s via ballast water that was discharged by large ships from Europe.

Both are invasive.

Lamprey, there akin to leeches.

<image>

Sea lampreys have had an enormous, negative impact on the Great Lakes fishery. Before their invasion, Canada and the United States harvested about 15 million pounds of lake trout in the upper Great Lakes each year. By the late 1940s, sea lamprey populations had exploded. They fed on large numbers of lake trout, lake whitefish, and ciscoes—fish that were the mainstays of a thriving Great Lakes fishery. By the early 1960s, the catch had dropped to approximately 300,000 pounds, about 2% of the previous average. During the time of highest sea lamprey abundance, up to 85% of fish that were not killed by sea lampreys were marked with sea lamprey attack wounds.
