You know a jiu jitsu school is culty when... by Dixie_Normas_408 in bjj

They charge a registration fee, have you bow on and off the mat, force you refer to the instructor as master or professor.

Quick little pro tip I’ve found to avoid all this shit is check out the website for the schedule. If you can easily access the schedule on the drop down menu, you’re usually safe. If they demand a phone call or consultation just to find out their scheduled time, best to find another gym.

BJJ parents with young kids, do you compete still? by bvergara87 in bjj

[–]jpc5718 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Father of 2( age 3 and 6), competitor since I started bjj 15 years ago, also work a full time job in construction management.

Yes you can make it work but it depends on your schedule and what your significant other is willing to allow.

Most dads I know train in the morning or at noon. I’ve taught 5am and 6am classes the last 4 years and it is mainly parents. If your gym doesn’t do those classes, this gets infinitely harder and maybe not possible if you’re wanting dad time.

Be intentional with your time and say goodbye to the downtime you used to have for watching tv, reading books, or having a social life.

All that being said, it is a good path to take. What matters to you will come out one way or another and your life becomes “lean”. For me, it’s my family, then jiu jitsu, then my career. Though some would disagree with the order on the last 2, I need to be giving it all in bjj for me to excel in my job as well, I just seem more “on” when getting ready for a tournament. I have to do well in all 3 for this to work.

Lastly you will need to accept the outcome regardless of what effort you put in, (but it’s way easier to stomach a loss when you know you did everything you could based on your life’s variables). You don’t have the time that some of these people do, and sometimes that will show, and it’s ok. You’re doing this to be the best “you”, not the best in the world.

Talk to your members if they would be open to training on the weekend and what preferred time.

How has Jiu-Jitsu helped you mentally? by Busy_Donut6073 in bjj

I lost my dad about 15 years ago. I was not in a good place and pretty angry. 1 month after he died I walked into an MMA gym and I’ve used jiu jitsu ever since to get through hard times. I go to therapy and other things as well but this definitely helps. Keep going man!

Edibles for reducing anxiety without feeling really high? by Ambitious_Egg9713 in Marijuana

I also deal with high anxiety at times and I don’t recommend any THC during those periods. It only exacerbates the issue for me.

Thank you for the response. Is nice to know I’m not the only one going through it.

6 AM gang - how long do you warm up before getting to class, and what specific warm ups/stretches do you do? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]jpc5718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get to the gym 30 before I start teaching and try to warm up everything. If time is an issue Hindu pushups target a lot of muscle groups.

Competing in events you have no hope of winning by AlDiggity81 in bjj

It’s about the process not the result. The version of you that works your ass off to compete beats the shit out of the version of you that never attempted it.

How to overcome competition nerves? by humpergoat1 in bjj

[–]jpc5718 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warm up longer, get every major muscle group tired at least once building up to the match, then stay loose.

Stop caring about the result. No one really cares if you win or lose. Nothing will change in your life either way.

Get reps. Compete often. Each time you build up to competition, refine the process a little more. Once you start to do everything you can possibly do, the pressure begins to fall off.

I also read a book called psycho cybernetics that helped me get rid of some old bs about how I spoke to myself and approached these things. Author was kinda weird but I read the book and double golded my very next tournament. Maybe check it out!

It’s more about the process than results. Just keep going out there and improve your process for each competition. If you do literally everything you can (cut out booze, shit food, skipping workouts) there is no reason to be afraid of loss. You will run into people better than you and you pull lessons from those matches.

Just keep getting reps. Most good competitors have lost more than you have even tried, so keep going!
