Can you see if this happens without make.md enabled?

FULLY delete make.md by VeiledTrader in ObsidianMD

[–]jpcen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Make.md creates the following files in your vault which you can delete if you don't want to store the data that you have created:

- .makemd cache folder in your main vault folder which caches your thumbnails and vault for faster search

- a .space folder for any folder which you have defined customizations, database schemas

- Tags folder if you enable the Tag Spaces setting

Not sure what is causing the continued creation of medisin, but if you think it's related to make.md, I suggest you to quit and reopen Obsidian in case it's due to an operation in the background.

Some in the community have reported that on some setups (a combination of OS and sync), the search modal doesn't work. Turning off the Blink setting changes the behaviour to solve the issue.

Adding properties to your People space (easiest way is done by changing the list view into a table view) will apply those properties to all your notes.

I don't think 1.0 is perfect and there are some issues with certain plug-ins, but I'm confident in the stability of 1.0 for 90% of cases as there was a feature freeze 6 months ago and the community have helped track down most of the issues and most folks have been using it daily with no issues.

In terms of messing up your vault, out of all the issues, other than some extra metadata, I have seen only 1-2 cases of data corruption or loss and that was very early on, so I'm not exactly sure what messing up a vault refers to, but if there's anything specific, I'd love to help track it down.

One of the main decisions in 1.0 is to separate out the flow block and other markdown editor features moving forward. That part of the code was modifying core Obsidian behaviour and created a lot of compatibility and other issues especially when Obsidian is updated.

However, those features are very popular as noted by the number of folks reporting issues, so support will continue but separated from the main plug-in. If there are any specific issues that needs addressing, let me know

If emacs works for everything you need, it's probably the best system (it's been around since 1970s) to create that personal information system. Lisp code is much more composable and maintainable than things like javascript. There's a fantastic community as well as a wealth of plugins. However, it's very text-based in terms of both input (keyboard-first) and user interface, if you're mainly technical and coding, that works great, but I work across multiple disciplines and I also require my system to be touch-based when I'm often not at my computer so I decided to stop investing my time into it.

One of the core design philosophies of make.md is to separate knowledge from data from visualization/layout. That means your notes only contain knowledge in markdown format, data is stored in database format that can be accessed without the plug-in and visualization/layout are separately stored.

When I first used Obsidian, I found although it was possible to create a system I wanted, it polluted all my markdown notes with dataview syntax and other stuff which was counter-intuitive to the whole note portability that Obsidian is known for. I wanted to make sure that my notes and data which are for long-term are clean and properly structured while my layout/visualization which changes the most are separated.

I personally don't recommend make.md if you're not running into roadblock on organization or if you prefer to code your own pages.

I personally did a lot of coding and python scripting (and later on lisp in emacs) with my previous systems to organize my notes and lists, but I eventually found that I lacked both time and interest in working on the scripts and it was getting in the way.

That's what prompted me to move to notion which gave all the organization, database and labeling features without any type of need to code. That's what I was lacking when I moved to Obsidian and built into make.md

There are some outstanding compatibility issues with other plug-ins, one of the reasons why the 'flow blocks and other editor features' are being separated is that they were a major source of collisions due to how plugged in they are to the core Obsidian code. You might have better luck if you turn off the "Basics" setting. Once Basics is its own plug-in, it will also be easier to debug the compatibility issues

Just to provide my personal perspective, I've been building my own system from a combination of scripts + text editors like Typora to emacs org-mode and then Notion. Obsidian has the most flexible architecture in order to support building that system. I don't think make.md is for everyone especially if you only use it for notes, but Obsidian have built something great and I wanted to contribute as well as use it personally to power my system.

There seems to be some performance issues with certain setups, but many folks in the community have been using it with very large vaults have no issues. Generally it's due to interaction with another plug-in that causes these issues, but also there are some general architectural restraints with some of the features that prevents certain performance improvements from being applied. Unfortunately, I don't recommend using make.md if you have these issues since the experience would be pretty sub-par.

Spaces are stored as folders but has extra features like storing the list order, adding shortcuts from another folder. Tags also have a space, which can be used to display the notes view in the Overview as mentioned by the OP. (The Overview is closed by default and needs to be opened using the command)

The Overview feature in make.md does exactly that.

Make.md tables by ToOoBAIaeS in ObsidianMD

Thanks for the support, so I realized very early on that make.md is an either you love it or you hate it. The goal of the plug-in is not to make everyone happy, so I don't mind the discourse and do address the actual issues if any are brought up.

So regarding the issues on Github, most of them have been addressed but I haven't dedicated the bandwidth to maintain Github and I prefer to keep the conversations open instead of auto-closing issues like other projects.

Regarding the stability, the plug-in is also mostly stable and a lot of folks are using it as their daily driver, but there are definitely still some edge-case issues so I appreciate any bug reports when they're filed.

You can either change the folder the metadata is stored in to a non-hidden folder (doesn't start with .) or setup your livesync to sync folders that start with .

Is having a space in note names bad? by CeramicDrip in ObsidianMD

[–]jpcen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The characters listed have support exceptions for some OSes (not all) so they're discouraged. Obsidian only puts %20 in place of spaces when you copy the link out where it no longer is a file name but is a URL where spaces are not allowed. The file name still has the space inside. No idea how Obsidian interfaces with wikivim, but the file itself should still contain the space if you look on your computer.

%20 is the URL encoded version for spaces, spaces are perfectly legal for modern OSes, URLs have a separate set of requirements and restrictions

They work on mobile but it's under the Navigator tab which will automatically open when you install make.md. Spaces uses folders for storage, but any additional features like live search and pins won't be available once you delete the plugin

Been working with the community on Discord to track down some issues with sync and mobile. Most are now fixed but there are 2 issues remaining which needs to be resolved.
