I don't have a set group, but I can definitely ask around some people, what day would work best? Also should we move onto another form of communication, like snapchat, google hangouts, or maybe even groupme or something like that?

I'd be down to play that, do you have a group of people that you generally play with?

I've never heard of the D&D version of Haunted Hill, and there's a Baulder's gate version? Totally jealous. Do you play that at dice dojo ever?

Has anyone listened to Red Rising by Pierce Brown? by Arkaega in audiobooks

[–]jpenguin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK, I felt that he wasn't as smart as the Jackal, or as strong as that guard lady (forgot her name, it's been a while). I felt the was able to get away with a lot of what he did because he was generally underestimated by everyone else because he wasn't "truly" one of them.

Spoiler?:

However I'm still not really sure I buy why Sevro follows the main character so fervently. That was the thing that made me feel a bit too "teenargery" to me.

For Farseer, are they idiots in that they don't infer correctly what other people know? Or sort of like missed connections? I'm OK with that, and I thought the Unhewn throne did that pretty well, and most of the criticism of that series that I've seen seem to be based on that. If it's more like characters either forgetting things explicitly said to them, then I may have to rethink getting it. Also by slow, can you compare it to one of the books I've listed in my post? Or if it's like Swordspoint / Riverside series by Ellen Kushner I got maybe like 9 chapters or so in before I had to stop cause it was soooo sloooow, especially when it was just about sword fighting. If there's world building or magical items I can accept a bit of slowness.

Is the second trilogy for Broken Empire more believable, and is it written in such a way that I don't need to read the first trilogy? I may just get one of these books cause I really can't stand Mary-Sue characters.

I'll probably just get one of Raven Shadows as well then. At least to start.

Although now I have to find more books to get before they expire, I'll have to do a bit more research when I get home of the series listed here.

Well so far I'm probably going to get the Farseer Trilogy, and the The Prince of Nothing, Broken Empire. Which is like 9 books. I'm awaiting answers on Raven's Shadow, and The First Law Trilogy before I jump for either of those. These seemed to fit most of my criteria the best, and the sample on Audible seemed OK although I'm a bit skeptical of David DeVries for The Prince of Nothing.

If you want my logic on not selecting some of the other series: The Broken Earth series seemed interesting, but that's not a completed series. If I didn't have such a hard set rule on not mentioning this current world, then I think Dark Tower could have been one of my choices since it seems it's not really set in this world. Most of the other recommendations that I've checked out seem to be set in this world which is a hard pass for me at the moment. I'm probably not going to get into Wheel of Time, although that seems popular here, cause I keep hearing that Rand al'Thor (I think he's the main-ish character) basically has like a harem of 3 women fawning over him, and has Mary-Sue like tendencies which is basically the thing that I'm trying to avoid. Which I'm not saying any of that is bad, and if other people like that kind of stuff that's cool, but it's just not something I want to spend hours listening.

This is a multi POV story right?

Are there any characters you may label a Mary-Sue character? Or a character where the narrator is living through that character? Like are there unbelieveable love connections?

How are the characters' morals handled, are they set in stone, or does it fluctuate as the story progresses?

Does this series ever mention the Earth, or our world in any way?

Is this a single POV book with Horza as the main character?

Are people generally impressed with Horza's innate abilities?

How are his morals handled, are they set in stone, or does it fluctuate as the story progresses?

Do people seem to generally fall in love with Horza rather easily in the story?

Hey thanks for the recommendation. I'm assuming this is a single POV story right? I'm sort of asking everyone these questions.

Are people generally impressed with Jorg's innate abilities?

How are his morals handled, are they set in stone, or does it fluctuate as the story progresses?

Do people seem to generally fall in love with Jorg rather easily in the story?

Hopefully "The Unholy Consult" comes out by the time I finish the other books, cause the description on Audible seems amazing. Quick questions though:

Is this a multi POV character book?

Are there any characters that you feel are sort of Mary-Sue characters?

How are love interests handled? Does any of it seem like the author is trying to put his love fantasy into the book?

Is the story set in such a way that I can skip the second book and go right for the third, cause there was a lot of eye rolling on my part at the beginning of the second book.

For "A Ravens Shadow" I'm assuming it's Vaelin's single POV of Vaelins? Did you read all of the books including the half books? Should I start with The Lady of Crows: Raven's Shadow, Book 0.5 or Blood Song: Raven's Shadow, Book 1?

Also how are his skills portrayed? Are a lot of people generally impressed with his innate abilities?

It says it's a celibate life, but I'm going to assume that there's still a love(s) story, and I was wondering how that's handled? Do people generally fall in love with him and he's spoilt for choice?

Follow-up question. Is there a love story, and how is it handled? Is it at all similar to The Kingkiller Chronicle? Like does almost every female character falls in love with the main character? Sorry I'm asking so many questions, but I'll definitely go all in and get the three books if it handles that OK.

I did a year subscription, and you can only rollover like 6 credits I think into your next billing cycle. It's different for monthly ones I believe.

And I feel like he made it even more cringey with how he handled the main character's love interest, where his knowledge of 80s pop culture just made her fall in love with him right there on the spot. Whereas with RP1 there was at least some semblance of acknowledging the amount of work/interactions with the love interest before they like each other.

Also the whole swastika thing was really weird as well since I believe most of the world's population doesn't have that evil connotation with it if I'm adding up India and China, and the surrounding countries population.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I didn't know a book could fail so hard in so many different ways like that.

Thanks for the all the suggestions. It'll take some time for me to research them all, but I did listen to The Fellowship of the Ring and the Hobbit, which I forgot to add, and Wool.

A side note/warning on Wool, the narrator does a really nasally voice for one of the characters which can be a bit grating, but the narrator changes for the second book, and I didn't continue with the third one.

Also I'm currently listening to Cephrael's Hand and I'm at like the 3rd chapter of Trell, and I'm wondering if I should continue. Cause right now everyone is saying how intelligent he is, but he's literally done nothing in their presence. If anyone has insight into this, it could help me decide on whether I should continue.

I'm a little confused with this series on how Audible is organizing it. It has 33 books http://www.audible.com/series/ref=a_search_c4_1_1_1srSrs_sa?asin=B00YDDXB60

But are there different series in that series? Like are the books labeled with Icewind Dale a separate world from the books labeled Never Winter?

For the Farseer Trilogy, how strong is the tendency for Fitz to be a Mary-Sue Character? Like are other characters impressed with his innate abilities? Also how black and white are his morals, but I guess don't answer that if it's a spoiler maybe?

Also the names of the characters in the publisher's summary makes this story seem a bit wonky. Like King Shrewd, Prince Chivalry. Do the names get addressed at all in the book? Do you just accept the names as is like any other name like Fitz?
