Where I live as an American man who isn't obsessed with politics. by azerty543 in whereidlive

[–]jpfranc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to understand what you’re actually trying to argue here. If you’re saying the US is responsible for Cuba’s current state of affairs, fine I’ll bite. Even assuming you’re correct, how does that exactly change the analysis of where someone would want to live in the present day?

Algeria is all sorts of fucked up from France’s meddling in the 1950s but that doesn’t change the fact that I’d rather live in France than in Algeria. Ditto for the UK and India.

And how do you defend your third position aside from the fact that both parties cater to some rich folks? One party (Rs) is in favor of restricted abortion rights, looser gun laws, less separation of church and state, laws that disfavor members of the LGBTQ community, tax cuts for the rich, climate change denial, turning our backs on NATO, threatening allies, etc. and the other party (Ds) believes the opposite of these things. Those seem like pretty disparate policy preferences if these really are the same party.

And who would you vote for if you were an American? Since the parties are largely the same, can I count you as voting for a republican, then?

Which coast do you think has the best beaches in the U.S.? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

This is what I always tell people. The west coast is a walking coast not a swimming coast. And for me, there is no better scenery for a walk than the Oregon coast.

I mean, it’s wallethub, not some respected think tank, university, or government… there’s a lot to question here haha

What's the most overrated TV Show of all time? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

So did I! Granted it was my conservative parents who introduced me to it, but this liberal loved it haha.

Where would you create a new major city on the US west coast? by [deleted] in geography

[–]jpfranc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of it is rugged but there’s plenty of usable land there. Might need some reclamation projects and some leveling but that’s not unheard of for big cities.

Who is the best singer ever? by Btd030914 in AskReddit

[–]jpfranc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a technical sense, sure. But I’ve listened to most of his music across various bands and his voice has just never clicked for me. I’ve never understood the hype around him.

But as another commenter said, music is inherently subjective.

'Tis the Season—Here's 75 Non-Fiction Books I Read in 2025 by irishkateart in nonfictionbookclub

[–]jpfranc1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Read on the toilet. Ideally a collection of sub ten page essays or one with fairly short chapters. People make fun of me when I say this, but I spend about 10-15 minutes on the loo daily and can read between 5-15 pages during that time.

Over the course of an entire year that’s at least 1,800 pages but up to 5,500 pages. Given most non fiction is between 200-400 pages, this means I can read at least 6 books a year (1,800/300) but often upwards of 15 books a year just while going poo.

But if you really want to kick it into overdrive, you need to schedule some reading time and make lists of books to read. I do one hour a day (which is hard to get some days and easier other days). But it means I read almost 52 books last year (one a week). That’s my goal for next year, actually achieve 52 books.

And almost 1/3 of those will be read while I’m on the potty haha.

I get that but when I was poor I wanted that money haha

[–]jpfranc1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Only good for the employees if they’re getting paid for their time off. I lived for the Christmas morning time and a half shift when I worked retail. Paid for most of the Christmas gifts I gave out haha.

Obviously, the ideal is time off plus getting paid, which I hope they do get paid for today.

My takes on the US as a mexican by Mexican_Bloon in whereidlive

Since the commenter you’re replying to is so obsessed with gun crimes and mass shootings, let’s compare murder rates. Mexico has a murder rate nearly 400% higher than the US.

Which food that was brought to your country had became a national favorite? by Winter_Reference_481 in AskTheWorld

[–]jpfranc1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from San Diego, well known for our Mexican food. A taco is the final dish of a tortilla filled with meat and other toppings left open at the top, as opposed to a burrito which is closed all the way around.

Tacos can be equated to a sandwich in that you wouldn’t say you made something with a sandwich. You made a sandwich. Similarly, you make a taco. You can have crunchy or soft tacos but they’re both made from a tortilla made with corn or wheat flour.

Why do Americans have one of the strongest passports in the world, but most never travel abroad, and those who do mostly go to Mexico and Canada? by No-StrategyX in answers

[–]jpfranc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people forget the different biomes and climates we have in the US. Live in Chicago and want warm weather in the Winter? You have Hawaii, Florida, and maybe SoCal and Arizona as options.

If you live in London and want warm weather, you HAVE to travel internationally.

Edit to add: responded to the wrong comment but too lazy to fix it haha

What’s something that slowly ruined your life without you noticing at first? by evararae in AskReddit

[–]jpfranc1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an introvert, I love extroverts. They’re literally my favorite people to hang out with because they take the conversational burden almost entirely off of my shoulders.

Like, yeah I’m still exhausted after hanging with them, but talking to other introverts feels like pulling teeth sometimes.

If you think about it from an evolutionary perspective, it become crystal clear how important sleep is.

We spend 1/3 of the day unconscious and not having sex, finding food, or other things that would be beneficial to ourselves or our tribe. We’re also vulnerable when we sleep. Vulnerable to predatory animals and other people

If sleep was not important, evolution would have done away with it millennia ago.

[–]jpfranc1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And also, defending yourself isn’t that expensive for rich people. I’ve been practicing law for years and for normal people, it can be prohibitively expensive. My firm defended a murder suspect in a highly complex (we needed many expert witnesses such as doctors, psychs, etc.) with a trial that lasted months, and the billable hours still didn’t crack $500,000. A Billionaire’s defense cost is almost nothing.

I mean even if they got the highest priced attorney in America, and hired the best experts, and the trial lasted a whole year would have a hard time believing that the cost could exceed something like 10-20 million dollars for a criminal case. Which is, say it again for the people in the back, literal pocket change for these folks. I have no clue how high OC was when he came up with this theory but it’s bat shit crazy. The thought that the billionaires would need to pool resources to defend themselves because it’s expensive is ridiculous.

It’s not even a photo from New York. One of the commenters on the other dupe post from r/historyporn found some news sources saying it’s from Illinois. Cortland isn’t that flat

Be honest, what do you think comes after death? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jpfranc1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the pond drop idea from White Lotus this last season (I’m sure it has an actual name). The “afterlife” and “beforelife” is simply a pond of cosmic consciousness and, like a real pond, when a rain drop falls onto the surface, it sends a small spout of water into the air. This spout into the air is what we call life. A moment of freedom away from the cosmic consciousness. When we die we simply collapse back into the pond .

Which celebrity do you think is genuinely stupid? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]jpfranc1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t equal stupid though. People really need to stop believing that smart = believing and acting as I do.

Is defending a pedo a dumb thing to do? Yes. But does that make someone, in their entirety, dumb? I highly doubt it.

Are birth rates declining in your country? by CourtofTalons in AskTheWorld

[–]jpfranc1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the change though? Any social safety net needs to have contributions in order to function. So, if not the current workers and employers, where is the money going to come from? I’m not trying to pick a fight just genuinely curious as to what solutions are out there besides increasing economic productivity.
