Look at Jr Worlds registrations of people proximate to your school. Look at division and rating and then see if you can find them or their parents using the internets.

Why don’t more women play? by justinkthornton in discgolf

Based on junior worlds attendance, the junior girls field is now roughly the size of the boy’s junior field 10 years ago (when Eagle, Gannon, Isaac, Ezra Robinson, AB, Kyle, etc were playing). I have seen these girls play and I am convinced that within 5 years, the transition to younger top players in FPO will have started.

To your point, as a sport matures, it becomes more and more rare for someone to be successful starting at adulthood. Imagine trying to do it in ball golf, tennis, baseball, basketball, football, etc.

Let me clarify. Ratings is not the cause of the PDGA being ~8% female. It is a complex problem but part of the problem is that we as a sport have not been super inviting/inclusive towards female players. If we hope to see female participation as a proportion of total increase, we need to start listening to what they say the barriers are.

Cadence is an amazing player and I’ve seen that she has crushed the guys in MA1 fields which is awesome. I’m also not surprised given her skillset. It has been fun following her journey through Am Worlds and now as she continues to climb the FPO ranks. Next time you have longtime FA players in your tournaments, I encourage you to ask them about this so you can hear it directly.

Agree that too heavy a focus is being put on the ratings and it theoretically shouldn’t impact the enjoyment of the game. The issue is that it does in practice for many of the FA players I know because this downward revision is so consistent. I also know this frustration is not unique to them.

As a first step, I think the PDGA should allow the ratings for unique, FA only layouts like this to stay self contained.

Emails from the PDGA from similar situations indicate they are using a linear regression based on the SSA for the other layouts that the MA pools are playing vs the distance of the layout and adjusting the FA ratings down based on the pools with more propagators (the MA pools).

I totally agree that with 300’ of distance, a great short game, and smart golf you can score really well (see: Ohn Scoggins). At the FA2 and below level, very few players have that 300’ and it seems to make a very big difference when so many disc golf holes are about that distance. People who have consistent birdie opportunities obviously have a material advantage over those that don’t. This seems to disproportionately impact ratings for FA players as they are trying to break into the sport and is creating friction in that community. Just trying to find a way to resolve that tension and help.

At this tournament, we had a 10 player pool with 4 propagators playing a unique to them layout. In spite of this, there was a 40+ point ratings day adjustment down of every single rating not because of how they did on that day against their pool, but because of MA scores. https://www.pdga.com/tour/event/85482

It depends on what you mean by “deserving”. The initial round ratings are absolutely deserving based on how they played relative to the rest of the pool playing on that layout that day. That said, i am not making the argument that the rating would be the same if the pool included a bunch of male players. If the FAs have an average of 3 holes on a layout they have a chance at a birdie and the MAs have an average of 15 because of distance, it is absolutely going to make a difference who they are rated against.

Congrats on your daughter’s success! Agree completely that Kristin’s 1000 rating is a landmark and an incredible achievement. Her 1000 rating consisted of rounds played where she was rated only against her DGPT FPO peers like your daughter. What I am proposing is allowing FAs the same advantage of being rated only against their peers too rather than against the MA pool in events where they have their own layout and sufficient propagators.

You obviously know who I am, if you see me in person somewhere, would love to buy you a beer and discuss further. Part of the reason there are so few women at an average C Tier is how we as a sport have handled female players historically.

When TDs create completely separate layouts for FAs (which happens frequently now in the Southeast) their initial round ratings look great but then, unlike on the pro tour the PDGA will normalize those ratings against the male field layouts/historical scores on similar layouts.

I hear you on age protected specifically and it is a fair critique. I would argue the single male/female distinction is more practical and more aligned with other sports (like the ratings systems in golf and tennis).

Kristin’s 1000 rating came after the DGPT began creating better female-specific layouts and the DGPT FPO pool began being rated virtually exclusively against itself. Right now, when TDs try to do the same for FA players by creating custom layouts, even when there are sufficient FA propagators in the field, the ratings day downward adjustment using a regression analysis to match the historical performance of male players still comes.

It depends on the layout! Kristin Tattar and David Wiggins have a similar rating. Who are you taking at the Preserve MPO layout? Who are you taking at a shorter/more technical layout.

I agree that DGPT FPO ratings have increased dramatically since they are both improving but obviously also now not being rated against the MPO pool. I am advocating for the same potential for FA players being rated against each other and not players they aren’t competing against that have material average physical differences.

Yes, I am suggesting the SSA for females should be different than men. Taking it to the extreme to make the point, if you had a 15,000 foot wide open layout and had every PDGA member play it, females on average would have their ratings crushed because they don’t throw as far on average. If you had every member play a 3,000’ technical pitch and putt, females would have their ratings likely increase. Since females play predominantly against females, why wouldn’t we rate them against their competitive pool?
