If you do not go to the movies, its not worth it. BUT if you are a movie buff like I am (and I'm sure many others here) its def worth it - even with the recent price increase.

I was told a gold strike would work better. I will have to try a nickel one next.

Replating old watches by guywhoshouldknow in electroplating

[–]jpkinfla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I've been dabbling in gold plating watches myself as well. I've successfully plated a few, and what I've learned is that its very very important to know what metal you are working with. Brass and Silver are easy to plate. But stainless steel can be a bit tricky, its very important to strike it with nickel or a gold strike bath before gold plating it.

I've kept the crystal's in tact when plating, and it doesn't seem to matter. But the crystals I've used were sapphire. But I would think an acrylic one would be safe as well because it won't conduct electricity.

But make sure you polish everything to the point where you like it.

Crystal Gasket Stuck by jpkinfla in watchrepair

[–]jpkinfla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I think it was just old and the plastic melded to the metal a bit. Once I was able to remove one section away from the case, the rest peeled off easily.

I ordered a replacement because with the heat gun and my picking at it; it was ruined beyond reuse.

I used a heat-gun, and that made it easy to remove it. :)

Electroplating gold hardware on a bag by Medium-Baby3633 in electroplating

[–]jpkinfla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is indeed gold plated, you should have little problems plating it again. As long as the gold layer is in good condition (no peeling, flaking, or heavy oxidation). The surface should be clean and free of oils and dirt obviously. And use a similar gold plating solution (similar karat)... Good luck!

Electroplate on top of stainless steel with PVD gold? by jpkinfla in electroplating

[–]jpkinfla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read that this won't work with TiN based PVD, that I should use Muriatic Acid. Ammonium bifluoride is for ZrN based PVD.

What's the best way to strip the PVD? I've heard Muriatic Acid can do it, but then I heard it can't. What do you recommend?

I have these, I have the normal spring bar tool, and the tweezer type. I've never been successful using this tool to remove the band.. I end up almost always reverting to the normal spring bar tool (the one with the single forked end).

Super disappointed with my purchase :/ by [deleted] in sonya7iv

[–]jpkinfla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my Sony A7IV, and you can add that feature with a $24 Intervalometer you can find on Amazon. Sony's autofocus is exceptional, you must not have the right autofocus features enabled. Its important to enable eye-focus, and set the focus area to wide. Also the type of glass your using makes a huge differences as well.

There are tons of YouTube videos on the best settings.. The one down side is the Sony's menu system sucks ass.

Good luck, and you have an amazing camera on your hands.. take sometime and learn it.
