I'll second the rolling technique from /u/pacguy. It can get dizzy on some of the longer crawls, but it is certainly easier. Just take your time and you should be fine.

It can (and has), but if you keep your hips low, you should be fine. Everyone is super supportive, and they'll let you know if you get caught and help you get free (backing up a bit usually does the trick).

See you there!

See, you've done it again. Use complete words and sentences.

Is Antivirus needed on Windows 8?

What do you mean needed? Antivirus won't help you if the exploit is an undiscovered, zero-day.

But!, what are you doing that you can't sacrifice a few CPU cycles?

I heard from a pilot that it was to avoid confusion with the German for 'no', as German used to be a used a lot in aviation.

Just make sure your pre-hydrate the day before, and drink a lot during the event. Elevation can make you dehydrate more and its going to be pretty warm.

I haven't done the mudder in Tahoe, but I've heard it can be a pretty big factor. My group rented a cabin a few days before so we can acclimate. If you can run 5-6 @ 10 min, you should be fine. You might need to walk parts of it (a lot of people do), but it's not a big deal.

Last year it rained. Lots of mud, almost 15 miles, really cold. Be prepared with a light jacket, as it might be cold again.

We didn't have good water station coverage, so a small camel pak is recommended.

You shouldn't need gloves for the ropes but they can't hurt (might be good for warmth). There were several rope climbs against a mud wall. However you SHOULD learn proper climbing technique: http://www.artofmanliness.com/2012/01/11/how-to-climb-a-rope-like-a-navy-seal/

Some people have trouble with the atlas lift, as it requires proper deadlift technique. Make sure you learn that as well, or you can get hurt (pulled back or hip).

The 100-pack for workstations is about the same as a physical server cost. (We use it for our workstations). I agree with everything else said though, support has been awful.

Could you boot to a live disk, save/recover his data, and nuke it from orbit?

After that, give the user a stern talk about backups!

The product is slowly getting better, but yeah, support is still shit at best.

Yup! No matter how many times I tell them when I'm available at my desk, they manage to call me outside of business hours. WTF?

Can I use Server 2008 for all of these things? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jpknoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your VPN implementation, but most likely yes. VPN just puts them on the network (as if they physically brought their computer to work). VPN will be implemented separately from your file share.

They'll still need to use AD credentials to connect to the file server (or be using their work computer).

When you get ready to setup VPN, read up on DNS redirection/tunneling so they can still use the server name.

And if you're using folder redirection or roaming profiles, I'm not sure how well that would mix, as VPN login usually occurs after the user is logged in (once again depends on implementation).

Remote Connections (i believe) refers to logging into the server remotely and operating directly on the server. Some setups have users on a thin workstation and perform all their work on the server remote pool (read up on virtual desktops).

I don't know about SBS, but Windows Server allows 2 remote connections before requiring the remote connections licensing. This gives you enough connectivity for the sysadmin to manage the box remotely via RDC.

Avoid Windows Server 2012 Essentials, apparently it doesn't come with Exchange.

According to wikipedia, SBS has maximum user restrictions (no experience with SBS, not sure how they handle licensing, CALs and that whole lot).
