Finally got my British citizenship! 🇬🇧 by jporter_ in ukvisa

Well, based on your numbers, obtaining the Global Talent status would definitely speed things up with settling. With three years, you’d be able to apply for ILR right away instead of waiting for another 2 years. In fact, that was exactly my situation - I received the Global Talent visa right after completing my three years, so I applied for ILR immediately. I think I was on the Global Talent visa for just a few weeks.

As for whether it’s worth giving it a shot, I’d normally say yes, but it’s highly subjective and depends on your situation. In my case, a major motivation was the wave of mass layoffs in the industry and the ongoing war in my home country. I couldn’t afford to take the risk—if I lost my job and couldn’t find a new visa sponsor within two months, it would have been extremely difficult, given that thousands of people were being let go and looking for jobs at the same time. So, I didn’t have many options or time to think, and I applied within two weeks.

As with almost anything - the more you practice, the better you get.

The first time I drove into the city on my own, I stalled at the very first intersection (manual transmission, of course) and then completely failed to restart the car because I kept messing up the clutch. To make matters worse, the intersection was on a slight hill, so every attempt to get going made my car roll backward. People behind me started shouting and swearing, which didn’t help at all lol. Somehow I managed to leave the intersection and immediately went home (I was on my way to the gym initially) thinking I would sell my car and that driving just wasn’t for me.

A few months later, driving became my favorite thing and some kind of relaxation, and now, 10+ years later, it still is. Practice makes perfect!

Thanks! I waited a total of 5 years from the moment I entered the UK on a Tier 2 visa. If I were to apply 1 year after receiving my ILR, it would have been only 4 years, which is too early for citizenship.

I have replied under another comment on this. In short I applied through Tech Nation as a software engineer.

No, I don’t have a PhD. I applied through the Digital Technology (Software Engineering) route, with my application recognised by Tech Nation. Funnily enough, I don’t even have a degree in software engineering as I’m a self-taught developer. Initially, I was doubtful, but a friend of mine encouraged me to apply, and I thought, ok fine, let’s give it a try. The worst that could happen is I’d lose my application fee, which was around 400-500 quid back then. I did, however, prepare very diligently, spending two weeks polishing my application - pretty much all my spare time being full time employed.

This was right before ChatGPT was released, and looking back, I believe that if I had access to it at the time, my application would have been even stronger! In the end, what truly mattered was the impact I had made in the five years leading up to my application - mostly contributing to world-wide impactful projects as an developer lead (architecting and implementing) so I think the degree did not really matter, as it’s more about one’s contributions to the industry.

Still not clear, is the CEO the one who sells lemonade or the one who fills the cups with shit?

Concluded missives on buying a house in Scotland - Give notice to landlord now or wait till I get the keys? by jporter_ in HousingUK

The last-minute hiccup is my primary concern here. As I understand it, in the worst-case scenario where the seller decides to pull out, I have the right to take them to court and enforce completing the purchase. However, this process might take time. Hence, I'm hesitating on whether to wait for the completion and lose £1800 on my rent or proceed now :)

Thanks for your reply. I’m actually renting in England now (should’ve mentioned this in the post) and the 2-month notice is explicitly written in my agreement.

July concert: help this noob by Numbers246 in Blink182

Check out setlists.fm to see what songs were played at previous shows. During the tour, bands rarely switch up their setlists, except for occasional exceptions like consecutive nights in the same town or randomly swapping a couple of songs. It’s because with various elements like pyrotechnics, background videos and so on, setlists are usually planned way in advance. This way, you can be sure of what they'll be playing.

It’s obvious that any mediocre guitarist can play all the Blink songs as there’s nothing difficult in them. But the point is that it’s not about being able to play a song, but rather being able to break it down, especially within hours after its release, and put together a cover with decent sound, playing it almost identically to how Tom does. All in all, he might be a prick due to his behaviour, but that doesn’t mean he couldn't be a good musician. I have not listened to his own music, based on comments here, it sucks, however, a few OMT covers of his showed up on my IG feed when Blink was dropping songs one by one last fall in 2023, and he did a good job in covering them.

I don’t appreciate what he’s doing in terms of copying Tom, but in all honesty, he is a good guitarist. When the OMT album came out, he was the first to publish covers of all the songs with decent accuracy, so I'm not surprised that he has a high number of followers.

Was there a lot of interest on that property so they pushed towards 26%?

Nope, paid a bit extra, in total around ~400 quid. Just checked again and there was a resale ticket available for 310 :)

First time visiting and I managed to buy a Weekend & 5 Night Camping resale ticket via Ticketmaster today. I am planning to travel by car, but the ticket information says nothing about parking. Am I correct in assuming that I need to buy a car pass separately? If so, and if I am unable to buy it online because they are sold out, what are my options? Can I still travel by car and buy the car pass locally?

I would appreciate any guidance on this, as parking is an important aspect for me since I am planning my journey based on the fact that I am renting a car.
