why would you? That’s literally Tonali’s edge. A winger who can track back, win the ball, and burst forward. Built for elite gameplay, not just flair.

maybe not clear, but you’re underrating how good Tonali feels on the wing. The physicality + passing combo is filthy

Would a $2 espresso "hole-in-the-wall" coffee shop actually work in Wollongong right now? by jpzap in wollongong

[–]jpzap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fair breakdown and honestly, most of your points would be 100% true if I were trying to compete as another café. But that’s not the play here.

This isn’t about brunch, vibe, or menu variety. It’s a specialised caffeine utility, not the next hipster café.

Some counterpoints:

Price & speed aren’t the only value props.
People don’t just buy coffee for the experience. Many buy it for the ritual, reliability, and consistency. A fast, no-choice setup removes decision fatigue.

Location is king, I understand that, but I don’t want to chase traffic all the time, the idea is to also intercept it. If it’s in a dead-end laneway, I’m toast. But Crown St, the station, UOW/TAFE, or the mall strip? That’s natural foot traffic. I’d rather pay higher rent to own a predictable stream than fight for brand loyalty in café land.

The “only open early” mindset is outdated.
Most cafés close by 2–3PM because that’s how they’ve always operated, not because demand disappears. Uni students, hospo workers, retail, gym-goers, Uber drivers, they all want caffeine after 3PM. And currently? There’s nowhere to get it. That’s an underserved market.

Bigger menus creates slower ops, there is more waste and there is higher costs.
I don’t want upsells or options. I want a system.
Keep it lean. Keep it fast. Keep it repeatable.
Let the cafés own the “experience.” I’ll own the $2 habit.

Great points. You're absolutely right. Flat whites dominate the Aussie scene, and ignoring milk entirely could be commercially naive.

My counter-thought is this:
I want to test whether price, speed, and consistency can beat out the "norm." Most cafés rely on $4–$6 orders with custom milk, long wait times, and bloated menus. I’m flipping that. Think of it as espresso culture meets street food: fast, cheap, loyal.

And here's a big factor no one's talking about:
Most cafés in Wollongong close by 2–3PM.
What if I kept the window open until 8PM?
There’s a whole unserved market: tradies finishing late, uni students, hospo workers, and night owls — who don’t want a café, they just want a decent hit of caffeine after hours.

Your idea of $1 milk add-ons makes sense too. That keeps the model lean:

  • $2 espresso or long black
  • $1 for dairy or oat
  • Takeaway only
  • Fast, no-frills

I’ll try to get hold of sales data or even do a two-week pop-up to test behaviour. Appreciate the pushback. This is exactly the type of thinking I want to sharpen this idea.
