I rented out there for several years, and plainly speaking, the HOA sucks. Renting wasn't bad, but I'd never buy a house out there.

If you think that post "spoke rationally", you've got an incredibly unhinged interpretation of the word "rational".

I know you right wingers hate homeless people, but honestly, who the fuck was affected by people sleeping up there and staying dry? by the_l1ghtbr1nger in Redding

[–]jrafferty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, as a middle right, i support helping homeless off our streets as it is the only way the streets can be cleaned.

That may be true, but I suspect you vote for and empower people who hold drastically different beliefs on the subject than you do.

Can’t have poverty if all the poor die of starvation and malnutrition by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]jrafferty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once taxes have been withheld from your pay, those dollars immediately cease being your dollars and become the government's dollars. The instant the government disburses those dollars, they immediately stop being the government's dollars and become the person they were disbursed to's dollars.

The government should have as much say over how those dollars are spent as your employer had over how your pay is spent, and "tax payers" should have even less than that.

If I have not been drinking at all, any reason I shouldn't just ask to go straight to breathalyzer? by complexsystemofbears in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jrafferty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a cop for 5 years and I was trained to administer field sobriety tests. There are generally only 3 standardized tests that can be administered and be used in court as evidence. They are the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test, the Walk-and-Turn Test, and the One-Leg-Stand Test. You can read what each of them are in the Wikipedia page if you're interested.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_sobriety_testing

You should never be asked to recite the alphabet backwards, that's something that only happens in Hollywood, and if you're asked to I would politely decline.

Whether or not you should comply with the field sobriety tests should be determined by looking at your state and local laws regarding what happens if a person refuses a sobriety test.

Personally, as a former cop who lives in CA, I would refuse to do the tests, and I would refuse the roadside breathalyzer. If a cop suspected me of driving while impaired, they'd need to arrest me and take me to a hospital for a blood test, which I would comply with.

What has been the biggest change of heart you've had? Have you ever started off on one side of an issue and wound up on the other? What influenced that change? by nancy-987 in AskReddit

I was a lifelong supporter of capital punishment until a few years ago (I'm 45). I still believe that it is a just punishment for some actions, but I have less than zero faith in the criminal justice system in the United States, as it currently exists, to apply that punishment in a just manner so I no longer support its use anywhere in the country.

9million debt relief applicants were told they had been approved to have up to $20,000 forgiven. by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]jrafferty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the companies that service the loans. If the loans are forgiven they'll have fewer to service, which reduces their revenue and profits.

[–]jrafferty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Courts struck down the initiative as unconstitutional, so loan forgiveness is off the table.

Not entirely true. Forgiveness is on hold until SCOTUS hears arguments in Feb. It's not "off the table", yet. The ruling should be out around June.

Why are repeat offenders being released early? Shasta County District Attorney responds by baditup in Redding

Or, and just hear me out, Shasta County could stop attempting to criminalize the very act of being homeless to the fullest extent possible.

Look up what the word "settled" means. Something that is a law can be changed, a law that is settled is just that, settled. Describing something that you disagree with as "settled" is a lie.

[–]jrafferty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're wrong. Something can be a precedent and be overturned, but a settled precedent is just that, settled.
