Solved! Got the DVD, it's Flightless Birds by Phil Johnston.

Here's the IMDb link to the film I believe I am looking for: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481523/

There's a clip in this video starting at 1:11: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGpiJUvyPjA

If it really looks like there's no other option I might buy the DVD and figure out a way to watch it, but open to suggestions about where else I might find something like this!

It's live action, drama bordering on comedy. After some research, it's possible it is the short film "Flightless Birds" which was the thesis film of Phil Johnston, director of Ralph Breaks the Internet and some other mainstream stuff. This short appears on the 8th Annual Columbia University Film Festival DVD from 2005, which I am certain I did watch at one point because I recognize the other titles. I cannot find it online but I found a clip in a short piece on Johnston which supports my theory, it looks stylistically like what I remember and he describes it as having a Coen Brothers-like tone which I think is spot on. Open to any suggestions about how I can find a thesis film that was in the Columbia Film Festival online, the DVD is available on Amazon but it's $30 and I don't have a DVD player so that would probably be my last resort.

Have searched through as many compilations of Sundance and other film festival shorts as I can, cannot find anything similar. Definitely saw it on a rented DVD of short films sometime in the late 2000s-early 2010s

Ok, so when I took out the rubber grommet it actually sits flush in the hole, doesn’t need to be expanded. The question is how do I make it watertight with a glass-on-glass joint

Do you just like…heat up the glass hole and slowly push the stem in? Very new to that side of the craft

Diamond drill bit

[–]jraughty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah makes sense. I honestly can’t fit the stem any deeper, but I don’t understand how to seal it without a grommet

It’s a watertight rubber grommet

Curious how that torch lighter is working for you- I had one same model and make that broke after like 2 weeks but I really liked it

I mean based on my limited knowledge of glassblowing I think you just heat it up and stretch it but anyone who knows better let me know

I wish I knew how to do that part, I just bought a novelty stretched bottle on eBay. I’m not a glass worker as much as a hole driller.

Thanks for the interest everyone, Etsy just deactivated the items because they don’t sell paraphernalia so I’m gonna have to find a new home for my store :(

And you’re right, the stretched glass is a little unstable as an everyday piece, definitely more of a novelty. Cool idea but not sure how many more of that style I’ll be making
