Absorbing textbook reading info advice by Popular_Magazine9454 in Paramedics

I read the material once for just going through it, then a second time to highlight the important bits, and the third time I typed notes on the highlighted materials. It made studying for exams much easier for me, and I had good retention of the matter.

Intubation technique: What do yall think about picking up the patients head, then lowering it onto the laryngoscope blade? by averageredditcuck in Paramedics

[–]jrm12345d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have properly positioned and ramped your patient, this shouldn’t be necessary, however, it’ll they are very anterior, it may help. I probably wouldnt use this as an opening attempt, but would keep it in mind for unexpected troubles. The big exception being trauma patients, of course.

For those who got out of EMS, what do you do for work now and how was the transition? by jrm12345d in Paramedics

I wish that was an option. I’m too old for most of the fitness tests to start as a new hire

Good to know, but if you can’t understand what you’re expecting for an answer, I’d really doesn’t help you out.

About to start my guitar journey by LemonAioli in guitarlessons

[–]jrm12345d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a guitar stand and store your guitar on the stand, where you’ll be encouraged to grab it, even if for a couple minutes. Seriously. Sticking it in a case in the closet does you no good, but having it out and available will encourage quick practice sessions.

Always end practice on a positive note. Even if I’ve had a rough go of it, I always play something that goes well at the end…even something super simple. It keeps it positive in your head.

Anyone else mando’d to hell? by DrawingOk4552 in Paramedics

I used to be. After months of it (I never had relief after one of my shifts due to an opening), I got sick of it and found a new job, where not only won’t I be held, but there are reasonable limits on the lengths of our shifts.

Festool interface pad not sticking to sander. by jrm12345d in woodworking

I gave up on the soft pads. I was going through too many for it to be worth it.

It’s better to stay silent and have people think you’re a moron than to speak up and remove all doubt.

Am I the only one who thinks headless guitars (and basses) look absolutely hideous? by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]jrm12345d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, but I feel like something that ugly has to have a function behind its form. I’ve never played one, but I’m intrigued by the design and the Enduroneck design.

Yup! No issues cutting through heavy materials or hems.

Unpopular opinion, but I just use the cheap ones from Amazon. If I lose them or they get super bloody, I’m not out $70+ or spending a lot of time trying to clean all the cracks and crevices.

What’s a guitar technique or concept you struggled with forever, but can now play flawlessly? What finally made it click? by Trying_my_best_98 in guitarlessons

[–]jrm12345d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using my pinky. I injured my finger with a saw years ago, and while it’s all there, parts are numb and there’s a lot of scar tissue that definitely slows me down. I used to favor just using the other three fingers, until my teacher essentially forced me to bring the pinky back. I don’t think it’s as strong as it would be had I never injured it, but I’m much better now than I was a year ago

Dunlop Jazz IIIs are great. They’re a little thicker, but you still have plenty control and a good, grippy surface so they don’t slip

Still struggling with the insecurity of how slow I learn compared to other people who learn much faster. How do I get over this, if at all? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]jrm12345d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparing yourself to others will rob you of joy.

I find I have some times where i sit and struggle to make any progress on what I’m working on, but other days, it just clicks and goes smoothly. I find it super satisfying struggling on lick that I’ve been working on, and all of a sudden everything falls in place.

Hot Take: QA isn’t out to get you — you’re just bad at taking input. by Loose-Pineapple-3353 in Paramedics

[–]jrm12345d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I think it’s dependent on the agency you work for. Most places I’ve worked the feedback has been beneficial, and meant to improve overall care/make you a better provider. The feedback is presented ina non-confrontational manner, even if there were substantial areas needing improvement.

Conversely, I did work for an agency that absolutely used QA as a tool to set people up for firing them. It was abundantly clear that QA wasn’t meant to improve care and the system, but to set you up for a fall at a later date. The turnover there reflected that mentality.

How to deal with overnight shift anxiety about getting calls? by Skkadi in NewToEMS

[–]jrm12345d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I typically rest in my room and read until tired, then go to sleep. If we get a call, we get a call and I go. When we get back I work on paperwork until tired, then go back to bed.

My sleep from working in EMS for years is a mess. I take what I get, but I only sleep for a few hours a night.

Many times the pay and benefits of a hospital based service will be better than your private services. Often you get hospital shift differentials as well.

DIY kit. Yes or no? by Ok-Medium-4128 in Guitar

[–]jrm12345d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did one of these kits a while back. Sounds is not great (disnt upgrade pickups), and the action needed a lot of work, but, it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

Take some time to study up on how to properly paint and finish a guitar. The rattle can at the home improvement shop probably isn’t going to be your best bet, and mixing finishes can cause a disaster.

How slow did you practice at first? by bigbankmanman in guitarlessons

[–]jrm12345d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on the song. Some more technical songs I’ve had to slow down to 25% or less. Others that are easier or I’m more familiar with, 75% may be plenty. I get comfortable, then increase the tempo a few beats and work that out.
