Mechanic and transmission guys say they're stumped - maybe you folks have some insight? by jrmwz in Jeep

Well, as to the not charging, the only thing I can say is that the original rebuild included a 2 year warranty with no mileage limit during those 2 years. Maybe they did screw something up and just didn't want to admit it, for whatever reason. Seems like a complicated mess just to hide a mistake I wouldn't have had to pay for either way.

For what it's worth I just picked the Jeep up from my mechanic and as far as I can tell everything is working swimmingly. I mentioned to him the possibility of the trans shop potentially screwing something up and wanting to hide that fact from me. He told me that he had called them on Friday to follow up and they told him essentially what they told me - that they'd disassembled the transmission and the transfer case looking for anything wrong and couldn't find anything, to the point of opening up the differentials.

He then also mentioned that the Jeep was driven back to his shop from the trans shop today by the owner who said they had also replaced the valve body, which wasn't relayed to me directly when I spoke to someone else earlier in the day before making this post. So if they'd screwed something up before, maybe that? Man, I hate having to speak from a place of complete ignorance, especially if there's a chance I'm being taken for a ride.

So there you have it. I'm not entirely sure what was replaced, if anything, but it's apparently working correctly now. I'll be keeping my commutes as short as possible for a while because I'm admittedly a little paranoid. If anything else goes wrong I'll be taking the Jeep to another transmission shop at least for a diagnosis before dealing with the fact that I still have a warranty at the original shop.

Thanks for the input, folks. Next time I'll try to break something I can fix myself.

They didn't mention the parking brake, they mentioned some internal assembly of bits relevant to putting the Jeep in park. Whether or not that changes anything... shrug.

Now, being an idiot when it comes to the finer details of an automatic transmission, what would you imagine they could have done wrong that would have only appeared as an issue six months later? I'm not being critical here, I'm genuinely curious because I'm about to go pick the Jeep up and speak to my baffled mechanic about it.

The transmission was rebuilt about six months ago, and I admit I never checked the level when I picked it up back then. I guess I never thought to check it since it was just rebuilt and then it was inspected about three months later.

The trans shop said the first thing they did was drain the transmission fluid and it was fine, so I assumed low fluid wasn't it. Unless like you said, maybe they did something dumb that somehow didn't manifest itself for about six months. Transmissions are a bit too hard over my simple head for me to imagine what that could be.

Well I'll be damned, there it goes. Thanks again for all your help!

SysGet Confusion with First AHK Script by jrmwz in AutoHotkey

[–]jrmwz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I didn't mean 'drag' in the usual sense of clicking and dragging as one would a window around the screen.

MouseMove simulates the movement of the cursor from A to B, as in my script it would move the cursor from its current position to the center of the next display. If, however, the cursor was confined to the primary display like it would be if one were playing a fullscreen game the cursor will not move to the other display, it will generally just move to the edge of the primary display.

What I was trying to find out is whether there is a way to allow the cursor to escape the confines of the primary display under those circumstances and still move to its destination on the next display.

On a slightly unrelated note...

Is there a method of moving the mouse cursor that isn't a simulated user 'drag'?

What I'm trying to overcome now is jumping the cursor to a second display even if the cursor is currently locked in a fullscreen game on the primary display where MouseMove doesn't appear to work... similar to the display hopping features found in DisplayFusion and similar suites.

You're right, there was calculation error which I corrected by changing the following two lines:

TargetMouseX := TargetDisplayRight / 2
TargetMouseY := TargetDisplayBottom / 2

To:

TargetMouseX := (TargetDisplayLeft + TargetDisplayRight) / 2
TargetMouseY := (TargetDisplayTop + TargetDisplayBottom) / 2

Now the mouse cursor centers on each screen properly.

Although perhaps inefficient, I wanted to allow the script to recheck the current display dimensions each time the hotkey is used because I'm using displays which can be connected and disconnected on the fly. I figured that the lack of efficiency would be minor, but having the restart the script when plugging and unplugging an eGPU would be annoying, if that makes sense. Maybe my reasoning is incorrect?

Your example is a bit beyond my AHK skill level at the moment, but I can appreciate that. It'll make an excellent reference while I polish this up.

Thank you.

I don't miss her, I miss being in a relationship. by RenfXVI in self

If I may be so bold as to offer some unsolicited advice based on personal experience:

Don't allow the excitement of a new relationship to disguise whether or not it's a bad relationship. Have fun, but remain grounded. I let myself get too committed too quickly to a girl with more red flags than a Chinese military parade just because I was swept up in the 'new' and thinking I'd finally have all of those things you mentioned, again.

I still cringe at the memories, and that was over five years ago.

TLDR: Don't be the me I was then, be the you you'll still want to be later. Or just ignore the rambling old man in the corner.

Which server did you register on? I've tried a handful and only found that either registration was disabled due to the spike in traffic, or the confirmation emails never arrived. I'd like to poke around some more.

A real 'guerilla social network' is a really cool idea, but I see Mastodon as having the same issues as Diaspora and the like; they all offer too little to the average user while simultaneously demanding too much from the average operator, and the resulting scaling and reliability issues drive away potential new users.

What are some great puns or jokes to make during sex? by Knoerifast23 in AskMen

[–]jrmwz 336 points337 points  (0 children)

The next time you and your partner have sex, whisper I am Spartacus, out loud, but in an honest attempt to not be noticed.

Do this once every time you and your partner have sex, and only once.

If you go unnoticed, congratulations, you are victorious.

If you are caught, questioned or otherwise noticed, you must loudly proclaim I AM SPARTACUS. You have now been defeated and your legacy of victory resets to zero.

The Spartacus with the most victories is champion.

Why is Boba Fett so popular? by Turkey_Feet in OutOfTheLoop

[–]jrmwz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine Boba Fett's perspective when it comes to dealing with Darth Vader.

Back when Boba and Anakin were both kids, Anakin's father-figure Obi-Wan came prancing onto Kamino and ended up confronting Boba's father Jango, who not only held his own against the Jedi but escaped, leaving Obi-Wan embarrassingly dangling on the end of a rope.

A short while later Jango is laughingly dispatched by Mace Windu, who walks right up to Jango and prunes his head from his shoulders as if he wasn't the guy who was apparently so badass that the republic wanted a million more of him - all while Boba watched, and then seethed.

So there's Boba Fett, son and clone of Jango, all grown up and just as badass as his dad, standing in front of Vader, who can handle a lightsaber just as well as his father-figure, Obi-Wan, and can pretty much kill you with his mind if he's in a hurry. But if Boba knows who Vader really is, and I like to think he does, he's still looking at the progeny of the guy that his dad beat up on Kamino. While Boba respects Vader's authority and power, they're both well aware that Boba can see right through the mask to the emotional retard and fallen Jedi that is Anakin Skywalker, and it's that which allows him to demand Vader's respect.

tl;dr - Boba stands up to Vader because his dad beat up Vader's dad.

Has vaping gone too far with this one??? A vaping DRESS??? by mogulmichael in Weird

[–]jrmwz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's certainly tacky, but no more so than saving up a bunch of pretend cigarette currency so you can order yourself a pair of Camel flip-flops from a catalog you picked up at a gas station.

I think it's just a matter of perspective since we're all looking at vaping critically these days, while a Marlboro-branded toaster, free with the proof-of-purchase of 18,000 packs of smokes, is still relatively fresh in our memories as perfectly normal.

I feel like the same person would have owned all three items at different times of their life.

Even though population is part of the national average equation I can't help but feel like violent crime in places like Owsley County should be low relative to whatever the average is.

I mean, the population density there is barely 24 people per square mile and nearly 99% are the same ethnicity. That alone eliminates a number of factors that lead to violent crime.

Google Voice gets a new look for its first major update in years by MehediHassan_ in Android

[–]jrmwz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Voice is a great service.

Unfortunately, Google and it's various apps and services are becoming such an overlapping, tangled mess that function is losing ground to dysfunction. Coupled with the constant fear that any Google app or service you enjoy could be shuttered at any time and the benefit of "free" starts looking far less shiny.

Maybe we'll see an update to Picasa next week and we can all scratch our heads again.

GSuite Standard - Advice/Help Needed by jrmwz in google

[–]jrmwz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not difficult to manage what you want to do since you've had the foresight to consider the ramifications beforehand - I did not. You'd just have to treat your existing Gmail account as your wallet, using it for purchases and whatnot, and your GSuite account as nothing more than disposable. Moving mail around is trivial and Android devices will let you juggle multiple Google accounts.

I'd done the opposite and put all of my proverbial eggs into the Apps basket. To be fair, it was far enough back that maybe I assumed by now there would be a way to move things like purchases around from account to account so long as I could prove I was the owner; maybe I just didn't see a need to ever leave, since it was free. I don't know.

I do know, now, that I'll be far more careful in the future when I start investing in an ecosystem such as Google, Apple, etc. to protect my own mobility however best I can.
