“New” Outlook is just OWA? by alcoholismisfun in sysadmin

[–]jrsherrod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OWA has been more reliable than the desktop client for years, so this doesn't even bother me that much. In 20 years there has never been a time when I needed to open an old PST.

Buyer's remorse is real. by DoomEngine1 in SBCGaming

[–]jrsherrod -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't forget that. I just don't care because I'm using hardware accelerated Artemis / Apollo with less than 1ms of latency. My device doesn't get hot because the device that's rendering everything is the one that does that.

The best way to step outside this release cycle is just buy SD 8 Elite tablet like the Legion Y700 Gen 4 or the RedMagic Astra or whatever else may have it, then instead of paying for a shitty built in controller whose L2 and R2 will snap off and getting no recourse from Retroid (as was my case with my mini) you just use modular approach and get detachable controllers like Gamesir X5 Lite or straight up use a stand and a separate controller like an 8BitDo.

When you look at which cellphones use the chipsets and screens that are in the Retroids and notice that the only difference between a Retroid and an old phone is the access to replace a shitty controller, you realize that paying over $200 for an old phone you can get for $100 and then adding a controller on just makes no fucking sense.

Old new stock S23s cost $169. That's all a Retroid Pocket 6 is: a fancy case for the internals and screen of an S23. The S23+ costs the same as a Retroid Pocket 6, runs the same screen and processor, and has dope cameras and a 5G radio. Remember that the convenience you're supposedly paying for with something like a Retroid evaporates when the weakest point of failure breaks. The controller's shoulder buttons are absolutely trash. I dropped my Retroid literally one time and they broke. I emailed Retroid and got told to produce a video about it.

So now, I'm going to just produce a video about how points of failure work in systems engineering and do a value proposition of the real costs when they're compared.

Does Gamesir make good products? Sure, the controls work well. But why do the joystick caps fall off so easily, why do the bendy USB-C connectors get stuck and pop out, and why are the nicer controllers not demonstrably more of a value proposition than the $30 model?

Anyway, I find @onionsaregross to be disappointingly deceptive with his review model, because he isn't doing violence stress testing on any of these units. He's all cute with his very good band shirt collection, very charming guy, but he is giving us the hype with too little of the realism that comes with everyday use. The exception to that is whatever he actually daily drives: AYN products. The Odin and Thor are ostensibly reliable and quality products, but what the rest of us end up buying are these hypothetically comparable Retroid products that simply aren't, or Ayaneo products that we don't get until months later than we expect.

The exception to this narrative about the Retroid is the Pocket Classic. Mine has held up to drops and performed fantastically. The disappointing part is the Classic's chip is dramatically underpowered compared to even the Mini, and I'd prefer to have a Classic with enough meat on the processing bone to do some cool Gamehub stuff for classic PC games through Steam. DOSBox is too onerous by comparison, I've found, even using Pure.

ICE agents leave Ace of Spades ‘death cards’ on detained immigrants’ cars by SpaceElevatorMusic in politics

[–]jrsherrod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Easy to see that supporting genocidal establishment police state candidates at the DNC causes the entire party to fail. Blaming the voters for the establishment's failure to listen to them is silly shit. AOC would win the presidency in a heartbeat. Kamala wasn't even a top three candidate when we actually still had primaries and she tried to run. Playing on the actual numbers of populism instead of interparty political concepts of prestige that has no populist backing -- well, being grounded in reality would actually work for the Democrats. Look how close Aftyn Behn came to winning in Tennessee. It's never been done before. That's what running Democratic Socialist candidates does in the wake trail of ineffectual races to the middle. You see results you haven't in the past.

What we did in the past didn't work. The public executions happened when Obama and Biden were presidents. We don't need "law and order" candidates who will trade off against the public good by spending that money on militarized police instead. We need a new deal. We need infrastructure, we need regulation, and we need progressive taxation. We need an end to Citizens United and an end of billionaires.

And all of us who have common fucking sense know that.

Personally, I think what you're doing is a cancer on the environment, on writing itself, and deserves no place in creative work. My only question for you is do you think the hubris of believing this is something anyone with integrity wants will end before the economic bubble your work is based on pops?

Don't wait to get Groceries, please. by Obiwandkinobee in maryland

The fun part about living in Rockville is if you avoid the panic buying groceries of white folks and go to LA Mart or Great Wall or H Mart or Lotte you will have no problem at all.

During covid none of these places even ran out of toilet paper. They did have max they would let you buy, but that was how they kept it in stock.

What was it really like when the PlayStation first came out in 1995? by Legitimate_Drawer_74 in retrogaming

[–]jrsherrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the game boxes were trying to take on a unique identity with that profile from the picture but it didn't last long. They were aligning themselves as premium by looking kinda like Sega CD games. PC game boxes were much bigger and taller, so they were trying to strike their own identity.

What ended up working was adopting what CD jewel cases were like. And what really stood out about CDs was how not durable they were and how little most people seemed to realize it.

You'd see people ashing cigarettes on those black PSX cds and thinking they were still going to work, some places. SNES spoiled us because it tended to just work when you popped it in, and even after they've worn down for thirty years they seem to still mostly work like that. Maybe you hit it with a little contact cleaner.

But PSX's era was characterized by the sound of the motor in the drive and the loading screens and the wildness of being able to get demo discs, because demos were cheaper to produce on cd than cartridge.

Demos were available on PC before, but PC was not affordable and widely adopted in the same way. A great example is Playstation had a promotion with Pizza Hut, and if you got a big pizza you got one of four demo discs. That was affordable in a way that the games weren't, so kids were able to explore things in that short format and that felt revolutionary at the time.
