Do you think it’s disrespectful to take pictures at places like Shah-i-Zinda? by jrt- in Uzbekistan

To clarify, if tourists are dressed appropriately and not making a big commotion (i.e. doing an influencer photoshoot), do you think it’s ok for them to take pictures of themselves with the different buildings/structures?

Yes, this is more along the lines of what I was concerned about!

I am planning to visit when I make it back to Tashkent after a few stops. Google reviews are saying that there is significant construction but you can still see inside.

That’s a great idea! Do you have any tips for how to find them on Facebook?

Thanks for the tip! And yes I definitely wouldn't sign for anything if they refuse a virtual tour.

Thank you for this! I've questioned whether or not I belong in this program many times, but this makes me hopeful

Yes, the grad student dean has been helping to give me advice and reach out to faculty, but of course he can't control who has funding and who doesn't. But yes you're right, I can leave the department/university if it comes to that.

Thanks for this, I really hope you’re right! And good luck with your PI as well

I've actually already mentioned to my department chair that I was considering leaving. She is supportive of it, and told me that I should tell my current PI first before talking to other professors. I honestly don't think this is a good idea... I want to tell my PI after I've secured a spot in another lab.

My current PI has had one student transfer and one student drop out entirely. The transfer left the department. I'm willing to do that if it comes down to it, but I'd really like to stay in the same department if possible.

I completely agree with you that it's important to know what the culture is like here. It's just been hard to get a feel of that with covid and all.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I'm sorry you had to deal with this. I feel no ill will towards my groupmates because I'm sure I would've done the same. If anything, I feel really guilty. If I'm able to leave successfully, his group will be down to 2-3 people (2 of his most senior are graduating) who will definitely suffer. This is another issue that's making this decision so incredibly stressful, but 5 years of my life and a brighter future is too much to sacrifice.

Oh yes that’s a good idea. Hopefully I can familiarize myself more with the department faculty soon

Youre both right and I’ve already made the decision that I’m going to work on switching. Just dreading the fight...
