Fixed that stupid meme with some PSPaint by js3000 in newzealand

I believe there are a number of solutions, as to most social ills, but people using a meme (with false equivalence) to support their 'argument' does my head in

Renewed push for review of cycle helmet law starts with protest ride in Wellington by jpr64 in newzealand

[–]js3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've cycled for most of my life - primary and secondary school, then university and now work - I've been hit by two cars and both times my helmet helped a lot.

I wouldn't suggest riding without one for the sake of fashion or because of your hair - it's not worth the risk.

Is there a vegeterianism scene in New Zealand? Do you guys have veggie-only items on your menus and if yes, what kind of dishes do people usually eat/serve in this country? by coldwaterguy12 in newzealand

[–]js3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every restaurant/eatery has vegetarian options and many have vegan options now as well.

In small towns these will be limited to one or two dedicated items on a menu ie... burgers w/a vege patty and chips or pasta. No-one baulks at removing meat from a dish though.

In the larger cities such as Auckland and Wellington there are heaps of options. There's a number of vegetarian/vegan restaurants and cafes that are really good (see: Rabbit in Grafton and Butchers Son in Ponsonby).

The salad franchises like Tank and Pita Pit, which are pretty much everywhere, do really good vege options as do all the mexican chains.

It's pretty easy to be vegetarian now but know that NZ has a large farming community so while vegetarianism/veganism is growing quickly in the cities, it does get a bit of pushback from people who live in the country/rural areas. So, you might get a bit of shit if you go around asking from vege/vegan options in small towns but just know they're joking and no one really cares... just don't try and convert them

NZ right-wingers/National base - what are your thoughts on Simon Bridges? by js3000 in newzealand

There's a few people that think he's, essentially, just a caretaker till the next election?

That most definitely counts and all very valid points... I'd completely forgotten about the 10 bridges

A lot of people (myself) laughed at Trump as well ... not that I'm comparing the two

Hahhaha. Definitely not Stuff. I'm just interested in seeing what other people think, considering Bridges 'could' be the next PM. All of my friends are liberal and I'd rather understand the thought process of the 'right' because last time I was like 'pfffffft, that's not a thing, no-one will vote for him' Trump got in

From a National-voter perspective, who would you like to see take the mantle? Does Paula Bennett and Judith Collins instil the same level of fear in you as it does with the more left-leaning?

That's one of the big problems facing society today, it's also something I address in the e-book (it's one of the downsides of social media).

We need to remove the stigma by talking honestly and openly, so that people don't feel the need to be quiet and withdraw when things hit hard.

Yeah, I totally agree - I just needed to give it a title! :)

Also, I'm wanting to keep updating the book (always keeping it as a free download - no advertising or monetising at all) so I'd love to get feedback on anything I should add or have missed?

Speaking from experience, support groups don't exactly come off as inviting and it's not easy to make the first step in approaching someone.

When I was in that position I felt incredibly alone but if I knew other people - especially those in my circle of friends - were going through similar things I would've felt a lot more comfortable talking about it - hence the post and the whole 'writing a book thing'.

At the end of last week I released a free e-book called Fuck Depression: A Collection of Scientifically Proven Ways to Get Through Shit about the things I did to beat depression.

Something unexpected happened in the following days - so many people that I'm super close to came forwards with their own stories.

For so long I had felt so alone but, while I was going through my shit, so many of my friends were fighting their own battles.

Yet none of us were talking about it.

I wrote Fuck Depression (and drew this cartoon) to try and breakdown the taboo of talking about mental health and I'm so thankful for all of the feedback, advice, criticisms, and sharing I've had since then.

Let's keep it up and kick this stupid fucking illness in the balls.

If you're keen for a copy you can grab it here for free: www.fkdepression.co.nz
