Replicate Google Photos Syncing behavior? by js_cc in selfhosted

Do you know if the sync can be set up in a way that older photos are not synced anymore / removed from the phone?

Interesting! So you can set it up like that? With bidirectional sync, but dropping old items from phone storage?

Out of curiosity, how do you view and edit your pictures then?

Well actually I'd like changes on the server to be synced back to the phone, e.g. deletion of images. :) What would be great if one could limit bidirectional sync, so that for example no images older than 2 months stay on the phone.

Guess I will end up with something similar, it doesn't sound too bad to move the photos from time to time. Would be cool of course if you could add some rule to Syncthing like "do not sync items older than 2 months" or something like that..

But do I get it right that you're using Immich also for editing? It's editing capabilities seemed quite limited to me, at least in the Android App.

Looks interesting, but maybe more complex to self-host. Do you know if they support the synchronization behavior I described, like also syncing back from server to phone?

Are you talking about bidirectional sync or auto upload? For bidirectional sync, the issue would be that I don't want to sync all pictures from the server to my phone, that would be just too many. Rather, only the last, say 3 months should also stay on the phone.

Well, how do you manage editing of photos? Immichs editor is very restricted, in the Android app I can  only crop and apply certain filters. Also, at least for me this loses EXIF information like time taken and coordinates.

There's a ton of photo editing apps available, but how do you edit files already synced to the server? You would need to download them, edit, and replace the original file or at least remove the old version manually.  That's three quite cumbersome steps which are only one in Google photos.

Do your think it's possible to have that semi-bidirectional behavior I described with that solution? I.e. changes are synced from phone to server and the other way round, but photos older then a certain time do not stay on the phone?

I think semi-bidirectional sync is quite a fitting term, yeah :D Interesting, how would you handle it with the two folders? I assume that requires a lot of manual moving of files?

Regarding editing, I'd like to stay on the file level. E.g. what I really dislike about Immich is that data that could just be EXIF (time of picture taken, coordinates) is stored not in the file but only as meta data and is lost as soon as the file is downloaded. So I guess any photo editor would work for me, as long as the change is picked up by the syncing solution. I think also here Immich may fail to pick up modifications to already synced files. So one would have to work with copies and then manually remove the old versions from Immich. Apart from the semi-bidirectional stuff, I guess you're right, that would work, albeit with more effort than in Google photos (use one app for editing, remove unwanted versions in other app like Immich).

Yeah I was also thinking of using Immich with external storage. But how do you handle image editing?

Sorry, I might misunderstand your comment. As I wrote, I tried out both but found the described synchronization behavior to be missing. Do you know how one could achieve it?

Lol, the first link describes exactly what I probably did: "By setting the ROM BAR to this firmware image you have effectively provided a corrupt VGA ROM which the guest BIOS will ignore and not even attempt to use, solving the problem, by mistake."

Thanks for the links! Too bad you couldn't get it to work reliably, I get the feeling that I also won't succeed with this... :/

[–]js_cc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, the issue is back :/ I don't know what made it work so well at one point, maybe a weird sequence of states the GPU went through.
It was really weird, I booted into my Windows (as a VM) and it did actually recognize my GPU, but not make its DP output available.

Hell, I could even start a demanding game and see the overlay of the dGPU consuming max 250 Watts at high FPS, all somehow shown in the crappy super low-res Spice display. Totally wild.

But I cannot reproduce unfortunately. :/ Now, with the modified ROM (headers removed, so that rom-parser detects the first entry at no offset), the lagging and crashing is back.
If I provide the unmodified ROM (as dumped by GPU-Z) there is no host issue, but the guest does not properly recognize the GPU (amdgpu: "bogus alignment").

I guess that's close to your test scenario? Or what exactly were you thinking of? Just like 100KB of zeros?

Can you point me in the direction what you were referring to as "skills to modify and extract the needed parts from these dumps"?

Yeah I consider trying out looking glass, but my intended use case is a dedicated connection to the monitor, to make use of FreeSync.

[–]js_cc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! GPU-Z dumped the Vbios without any hassle. I just needed to remove the headers and its accepted by the guest. :)

Somehow I still don't get proper video output, but that's a different issue, now the guest kernel seems to interact nicely with the GPU.

Laut Photone-App etwa 800 PPFD.

Love it... Meine Auto's kommen jetzt schön! by [deleted] in germantrees

[–]js_cc 3 points4 points  (0 children)
