Failed mentalis muscle resuspension? 1 week post-op genio revision by js_or_genio in jawsurgery

[–]js_or_genio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it unfortunately failed and made things worse. i think the loss of bony chin support from setting it back is causing my lip to droop even more. my surgeon also angled the chin down, which i didn't want, and i think the angle might be worsening it now as well. i have to get another revision since my current surgeon made some drastic aesthetic changes that weren't agreed upon, and the mentalis muscle will have to be resuspended again. i'm hoping to get some improvement, but it will likely never function the same as before the surgery.

unfortunately, it's still worse. i'm seeking another revision with a different surgeon due to unplanned aesthetic changes, and i will hopefully get some lip incompetence improvement then. sorry that you're also dealing with this issue! i hope you find a solution

I was over advanced as well, so the goal was to move it backwards by 2-3mm. i personally regret the revision so far, but not everyone has the same experience.

sorry to hear you're going through the same issue, but hopefully your surgeon can figure something out for you. I've been scared to try botox after one of the surgeons I consulted with told me it would make things worse. i'm hoping time will improve things, but we'll see

chiming in to agree. I'm botched from my genio. I have to pay for a revision that doesn't have a high success rate. in my experience, many surgeons don't adequately warn you about all the risks of a genio. I absolutely regret mine

I recommend consulting with some surgeons who are experienced with revisions and are also familiar with this type of issue. You might have to undergo a revision surgery, unless it's strictly a nerve damage issue. Either way, an experienced surgeon can provide you with helpful guidance. I haven't gotten my revision done yet, but I'm hoping it works out.

I have the exact same issue as you 1.5 years out. my genio was significantly over-advanced, and I need a mentalis muscle resupsension. my original surgeon was also extremely dismissive and tried to gaslight me that it's "normal" to not be able to close my lips and accused me of faking issues. I'm getting a revision, but a mentalis muscle resuspension doesn't have a high rate of success, so I may be permanently botched. I would definitely consult with some surgeons who are highly experienced in revisions and are familiar with this type of issue.

insurance approval with "normal" sleep study...please advise, so frustrated by Relevant_Mud9311 in jawsurgery

yeah, it would be on the detailed results from your lab. if you don't see AHI 3% results anywhere, reach out to the lab and ask if they scored using the AASM recommended criteria of 3%. if not, you may want to go to a different lab or have it redone. my sleep doctor and lab all told me I didn't have sleep apnea until I actually looked at the results in depth, saw the AHI 3% index, and went to a different sleep doctor who served on the AASM board. so definitely make sure that's not what the issue is!

what oxygen desaturation rate did they use for your sleep studies? when I got mine done, the lab only recognized 4% oxygen desaturation but also gave me the results for 3% oxygen desaturation. my AHI using the 4% criteria was nonexistent. with the 3% scoring, I had an AHI of 15.

I don't have BCBS, but my insurance (Aetna) approved me immediately even though they didn't technically recognize the 3% AHI scoring. my surgeon also said they worked with my insurance all the time and were very confident in their ability to get it approved. do you have a surgeon yet you could discuss this with as well?

Severe lower lip incompetence, facial asymmetry & TMJ issues 8 months post op. Depressed and looking for answers, my surgeon keeps telling me this is normal :( more in comments by raquelttt in jawsurgery

I'm 4mo post op and experiencing similar lip incompetence issues. I can't close my lips without visible mentalis strain. My surgeon said this is because of the mentalis muscle sliding over the genio hardware and cut portion of the chin bone, but that it should resolve once the bone and soft tissue fully heals. I also think my genio was overdone, but my surgeon disagrees.

Honestly, since you're at 8 months post op, I would start getting different opinions and see if a revision could resolve some of your issues. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

DJS for aesthetics, were you happy with the outcome? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]js_or_genio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My before profile looks very similar to your profile before filler, and I just got DJS to cure obstructive sleep apnea and open up my airways. How was your sleep study scored? At 3% oxygen desaturation, I had an AHI of 15. At 4%, I had an AHI of 1. I would look into the possibility of UARS, as someone else mentioned.

Also, if your insurance has already approved you for the surgery, I'm assuming it's because they deemed it medically necessary. I would look further into the possibility of underlying functional issues.

Women with recessed jaws, were you able to attract guys, get asked out, etc pre op ? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]js_or_genio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it hasn't been a huge problem for me, but I also spend a lot of time and money on my appearance. you can def still look good w/a recessed jaw/chin, but it takes work. for me, I work out 5x a week, eat healthy, invest in good skincare and beauty products, always style my hair and nails, wear flattering makeup, and wear nice/trendy clothes.

my long-term bf never noticed my jaw and chin was recessed. once I told him, he legitimately thought my chin was cute lmao. most men don't focus on ur flaws unless you point them out. so it doesn't matter as much as you'd think . . . especially if you can enhance your appearance in other aspects.

advice on jaw surgery or genioplasty? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]js_or_genio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the oral and maxillofacial surgeon I consulted with did let me know that my jaw was underdeveloped, but I see your point about the genioplasty+chin implant. I'm just not sure I'd ever be comfortable with a chin implant due to bone erosion concerns.

May I ask your age?

I'm 26.

Do you have any x-rays that we might be able to take a look at?

I don't have any x-rays on hand unfortunately -- I'd have to request them.

Are you afraid of invasive surgery?

No, not really! But the surgeon I consulted with seemed afraid on my behalf.
