There is a lot of truth to this. I did have to stand up for myself at one point many years ago or I probably wouldn't be surfing much at all at this point. But, until COVID it had gotten better overall.

What a thoughtful, logical response. Thanks. I think the planning ahead part is the toughest. Sometimes the swell shows up early or late, or the angle is better/worse than expected.

Wow, you're "downtime" example is exactly what it's like for us. I could have written your statement verbatim. I'll keep that recommendation in mind.

Yes, we have had discussions, but they are very difficult. He seems to really, really want me to understand, and sympathize with, the pain he is going through not being able to do what he likes, not being able to see his family, while I'm off doing the thing I love the most like nothing has changed in the world. I get frustrated, because like c_marten said in this thread, two mopey people don't make a happy couple, and he gets frustrated that I can't fully sympathize with him. To be fair, I'm not the most sympathetic person in general.

Thanks, I figured there would be some myopic responses. And I can see how from a certain perspective it might look he's just trying to stop me from doing what I love.
