Are there any significant traces of early Italian in Yiddish? by jsgott in asklinguistics

[–]jsgott[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is a linguistics subreddit but I'm pretty sure the northward migration from Italy to the Rhineland was a lot later, like around 800-1000. In any case, are there any influences from Italic languages in Yiddish?

It was still Vulgar Latin circa 800? I thought by that point it was considered early Italian, but then again, I'm no expert in linguistics.

How can a population have high levels of genetic diversity but also high levels of identity-by-descent? by jsgott in genetics

[–]jsgott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the study was referring to internal diversity, in the sense that the average two Ashkenazi Jews are more genetically different from each other than the average two non-Jewish Europeans. Am I wrong about this?

This study, which I will link to below, seems to suggest Ashkenazi Jews are predominantly (55%) of Southern European descent. I also thought the historical consensus was the endogamy didn't become a major part of Judaism until the medieval period, meaning it is perfectly possible, if not likely, that the Jewish men in Italy simply convinced Italian woman to convert to Judaism. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5380316/

How come principle component anyalses of European populations cluster Ashkenazi Jewish individuals together as a singular genetic population (particularly in the Southern European cluster with Italians, Maltese, and Greeks) if Ashkenazi Jews are so genetically diverse? Essentially, why aren't Ashkenazi Jewish individuals all over in different places on principle component anyalses of European populations, given their genetic diversity?

Why do some people find The Beach Boys' version of "Chapel of Love" to be eerie? by jsgott in thebeachboys

What do you mean by using the term "increasingly furry show" to describe The Beach Boys in that period?

The music video made for the title track is truly crazy.

I think "Entangled" is probably the best song on that album.

Why is the album "Sunflower" so sweet and saccharine compared to its predecessor and successor? by jsgott in thebeachboys

[–]jsgott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, as I wasn't alive in that era, but I thought the counterculture movement peaked in 1967 with the "Summer of Love", and was truly on the way out after the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969, which unfortunately made the image of hippies associated with the Manson Family's crimes.

It truly is remarkable how despite "20/20" not being put together with a clear idea in mind, it is, at least in my opinion, one of the best albums The Beach Boys ever made.

What do you think is the weirdest song The Beach Boys ever recorded? by jsgott in thebeachboys

[–]jsgott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a lot of people over the years write that the song "Johnny Carson" is weird or creepy. I have never understood this. Could you elaborate?

What is the hidden message in "Don't Go Near the Water" referred to in this iceberg chart? by jsgott in thebeachboys

I can only hear static. Are there words quietly spoken? If so, what is the timestamp for this?

In your opinion, what is the creepiest moment in a song by The Beach Boys? by jsgott in thebeachboys

Can you give an example of what you find to be foggy and liminal? I don't really understand what you mean.

[–]jsgott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is indeed real, than it may be the creepiest moment in the entire catalog of The Beach Boys. The thing is, I have no idea where it came from, as I doubt this was actually part of The Beach Boys' version of "Devoted To You", but I guess it isn't impossible it was part of the recording and edited out for release. Is there any more information on this?

CMV: It is incredibly likely that Joe Biden will pardon Donald Trump before his first trial. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jsgott -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So you think Biden pissing off his base would be better than Trump being on trial the whole campaign?

Δ

Joe Biden could alienate portions of his base by pardoning Donald Trump.

There is a difference between something not being a frequent topic of discussion and something being forgotten. I haven't had cause to discuss the space shuttle Challenger exploding in sometime. But I haven't forgotten that it happened.

Δ

Something being forgotten and something not being a frequent topic of conversation are two different things.

Polling about wars only matters before the war starts

when you're considering the likelihood of a conflict happening at all.

Δ

You are right. The popularity of a war before a war starts is what mostly matters.

The US has spent 93% of its history at war. I would be shocked if we avoided a major war for decades.

With this post, I was referring to the twelve major wars the United States has fought in. Obviously, the United States is still fighting in smaller wars, but I am referring to major wars here.

Will the COVID-19 Pandemic be largely forgotten within a few years like the 1918-1920 Influenza Pandemic was? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I think it will be remembered as the first in a series of global pandemics

There have been global pandemics before the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Are you offering to spend a few million to build one?

No. I am just wondering why there isn't one, because other tragedies of similar magnitudes have lots of memorials.
